UC Riverside: International Studies Association and the Institute for Research on World-Systems University of California-Riverside..
    More info
This paper argues that present world-system analysis focuses too much upon each and every new historical twist and turn such that it is chasing its tail as there is always one new development, social type, mode of production, and what not. It is argued that other sciences pass through this taxonomic stage to go on to more mature theoretical development, where classification and typology give way to generative theory. Examples of a theoretical generative procedure to yield the 19th century Atlantic economy is provided.
