Irradiated brown dwarfs offer a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between stellar and planetary atmospheres. We present high-quality Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3/G141 phase-resolved spectra of the white dwarf-brown dwarf binary GD 1400, covering more than one full rotation of the brown dwarf. Accounting for brightness variations caused by ZZ Ceti pulsations, we revealed weak (∼1%) phase-curve amplitude modulations originating from the brown dwarf. Subband light-curve exploration in various bands showed no significant wavelength dependence on amplitude or phase shift. Extracted day- and nightside spectra indicated chemically similar hemispheres, with slightly higher dayside temperatures, suggesting efficient heat redistribution or the dominance of radiative escape over atmospheric circulation. A simple radiative and energy redistribution model reproduced the observed temperatures well. Cloud-inclusive models fit the day and night spectra better than cloudless models, indicating global cloud coverage. We also begin qualitatively exploring atmospheric trends across six irradiated brown dwarfs, from the now complete “Dancing with the Dwarfs” white dwarf-brown dwarf sample. The trend we find in the dayside/nightside temperature and irradiation levels is consistent with efficient heat redistribution for irradiation levels less than ∼109 erg s−1 cm−2 and decreasing efficiency above that level.

    More info
We present the first results of an extensive spectroscopic survey of directly imaged planet host stars. The goal of the survey is the measurement of stellar properties and abundances of 15 elements (including C, O, and S) in these stars. In this work, we present the analysis procedure and the results for an initial set of five host stars, including some very well-known systems. We obtain C/O ratios using a combination of spectral modeling and equivalent-width measurements for all five stars. Our analysis indicates solar C/O ratios for HR 8799 (0.59 ± 0.11), 51 Eri (0.54 ± 0.14), HD 984 (0.63 ± 0.14), and GJ 504 (0.54 ± 0.14). However, we find a supersolar C/O (0.81 ± 0.14) for HD 206893 through spectral modeling. The ratios obtained using the equivalent-width method agree with those obtained using spectral modeling but have higher uncertainties (∼0.3 dex). We also calculate the C/S and O/S ratios, which will help us to better constrain planet formation, especially once planetary sulfur abundances are measured using JWST. Finally, we find no evidence of highly elevated metallicities or abundances for any of our targets, suggesting that a super metal-rich environment is not a prerequisite for large, widely separated gas planet formation. The measurement of elemental abundances beyond carbon and oxygen also provides access to additional abundance ratios, such as Mg/Si, which could aid in further modeling of their giant companions.
  • Barman, T. S. (2025). Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation on Sub-Neptune Exoplanet Hazes through Laboratory Experiments. Planetary Science Journal, 6(Issue 6). doi:10.3847/psj/adda4a
    More info
Temperate sub-Neptune exoplanets could contain large inventories of water in various phases, such as water worlds with water-rich atmospheres or even oceans. Both space-based and ground-based observations have shown that many exoplanets likely also contain photochemically generated hazes. Haze particles are a key source of organic matter and may impact the evolution or origin of life. In addition, haze layers could provide a mechanism for lower-atmospheric shielding and ultimately atmospheric retention. Often orbiting close to M dwarf stars, these planets receive large amounts of radiation, especially during flaring events, which may strip away their atmospheres. M dwarf stars are known to have higher stellar activity than other types of stars, and stellar flares have the potential to accelerate atmospheric escape. In this work, we present the results from laboratory investigations of UV radiation effects simulating two different stellar flare energies on laboratory-produced exoplanet hazes made under conditions analogous to water-world atmospheres. We find that both simulated flares altered the overall transmittance and reflectance of the hazes, and higher-energy “flares” make those alterations more pronounced. On a larger scale, these laboratory-made hazes show potential signs of degradation over the simulated flaring period. Our results provide insight into the effects that stellar flaring events have on potential exoplanet haze composition and the ability for water-world-like exoplanets to retain their atmospheres.

    More info
We present an atmospheric characterization and orbital analysis of HD 206893 B, an exceptionally red, L/T-transition substellar companion in a multiplanetary system, via Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC) high-resolution (R ∼ 35,000) K-band spectroscopy. Using PHOENIX atmospheric models in a forward-model framework that fits the spectrum of the companion and diffracted starlight simultaneously, we detect HD 206893 B at >8σ significance via cross correlation in two epochs. We find an effective temperature for the companion of 1634 − 38 + 72 K and a log g of 4.55 − 0.22 + 0.17 . Only accounting for statistical uncertainties, we measure the carbon-oxygen ratio (C/O) of this companion to be 0.57 ± 0.02, or near-solar while assuming solar metallicity. The C/O ratio we measure fits the tentative trend of >4 MJup companions having near-solar C/O ratios while less massive companions have greater-than-solar C/O ratios. Using substellar evolution models, we find an age of 112 − 22 + 36 Myr, a mass of 22.7 − 1.7 + 2.5 MJup, and a radius of 1.11 ± 0.03 RJup for this companion. We also use KPIC radial velocity data to fit the orbit of HD 206893 B and analyze the orbital stability of this system. We find that the orbital stability is relatively independent of the mass of HD 206893 B, and favors an orbital configuration where B and its interior planetary companion, HD 206893 c, are coplanar. The measured C/O ratio coupled with the current architecture of the system cannot rule out the core accretion scenario, nor the disk fragmentation scenario regarding the formation pathway of HD 206893 B.

    More info
Lyman-alpha (Lyα) is the most prominent ultraviolet (UV) emission line in low-mass stars, playing a crucial role in exoplanet atmospheric photochemistry, heating, and escape. However, interstellar medium (ISM) absorption typically obscures most of the Lyα profile, requiring reconstructions that introduce systematic uncertainties. We present intrinsic Lyα profiles for 12 high-radial-velocity (RV) K and M dwarfs, where Doppler shifting minimizes ISM contamination, allowing direct measurements of ∼50%–95% of the line flux. Our sample spans the K-to-M spectral transition, enabling us to constrain the dependence of self-reversals in Lyα emission profiles on effective temperature (Teff). The depth of self-reversal, driven by non–local thermodynamic equilibrium effects, decreases with decreasing Teff, with M dwarfs exhibiting little to none. Two stars, Ross 1044 and Ross 451, were observed over multiple days, revealing ∼20% Lyα variability confined to the line core—implying that studies relying on reconstructions may underestimate temporal variability. We find strong correlations between Lyα flux, peak-to-trough ratio, and hydrogen departure coefficients with Teff, providing empirical constraints for stellar atmosphere models. A comparison of Lyα flux in the habitable zone shows measured values for high-RV stars less than the reconstructed values for the rest of the sample, likely due to the older ages of the high-RV stars and/or overestimated reconstructed fluxes due to model deficiency (e.g., neglecting self-reversal). Our results establish an empirical foundation for Lyα emission in K and M dwarfs, reducing uncertainties in reconstructions and improving models of stellar UV emission relevant to exoplanetary studies.

Context. Analyses of stellar spectra, stellar populations, and transit light curves rely on grids of synthetic spectra and center-to-limb variations (limb darkening) from model stellar atmospheres. Extensive model grids from PHOENIX, a generalized non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) 1D and 3D stellar atmosphere code, have found widespread use in the astronomical community, however current PHOENIX/1D models have been substantially improved over the last decade. Aims. To make these improvements available to the community, we have constructed the NewEra LTE model grid consisting of 37438 models with 2300 K ≤ Teff ≤ 12 000 K, 0.0 ≤ log(g) ≤ 6.0, metallicities [M/H] from −4.0 to +0.5, and for metallicities −2.0 ≤ [M/H] ≤ 0.0 additional α element variations from −0.2 ≤ [α/Fe] ≤ +1.2 are included. Methods. The models use databases of 851 million atomic lines and 834 billion molecular lines and employ the Astrophysical Chemical Equilibrium Solver for the equation of state. All models in the NewEra grid have been calculated in spherical symmetry because center-to-limb variation differences from plane-parallel models are quite large for giants and not insignificant for dwarfs. Results. All model data are provided in the Hierarchical Data Format 5 (HDF5) format, including low and high sampling rate spectra. These files also include a variety of details about the models, such as the exact abundances and isotopic patterns used and results of the atomic and molecular line selection. Conclusions. Although the model structures have small differences with the previous grid generation, the spectra show significant differences, mostly due to the updates of the molecular line lists.
