Presentations
- Vaden, C., & Ritchie, M. (2019, October). In the Shadow of Thomas, Georgia and Albert. Panel presentation and discussion. University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah: Rocky Mountain Printmaking Alliance.More infoI co-chaired a panel for the biennial Rocky Mountain Printmaking Alliance (RMPA) conference in SLC, Ut at University of Utah.Panel Details: "Living in the Shadow of Thomas, Georgia and Albert" In this panel “West” refers to a geographic region and associated cultures in the western United States. “Western Art” references art produced by artists living in the West and art produced by artists about the West. “Western art” comes with baggage and many serious artists avoid being identified as makers of such. Yet, those of us living in the West are western artists in the broadest sense and many, if not most of us, speak to issues specific to contemporary life in the western United States. We are influenced, often deeply, by place, culture and the social and political issues of our communities. This panel is an attempt to own our identities as western artists. It asks both audience-attenders and presenters to consider their art lineage from western artists. What artists working in the West or making art about the West have influenced their work? How do they engage western issues in their work and continue this visual dialogue? Has the role of making art about and in the West changed? The hour-long panel will be fast-paced. We will open the panel with participant-attenders taking a few moments to consider and list their western artistic influences. The panel will proceed with each of the panelists showing a few images of their work and several artists they have identified who have western art influences. Presented artists will be selected through an open call. We seek to keep panelist presentations to 12 minutes each, then move to moderator generated connections with the final 15 minutes open for conversation and discussion between the panelists and the participant-attenders. Cerese Vaden and Mark Ritchie will moderate the panel.
- Vaden, C. (2018, Oct). United by Prints, Undivided by Mountains Panel Presentation. Panel Presentation and Day long Social Event. University of Wyoming , Laramie, WY: Mid American Printmaking Conference and University of Wyoming.More infoI curated an invitational exhibition and chaired a Panel both titled, “United by Prints, Undivided by Mountains.” The exhibition and panel were both held at the National Mid American Print Council (MAPC ) Biennial Conference titled, “Go West: The Collaborative Turn”, at University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY, October 3-6, 2018. The Mid America Print Council is an educational organization whose goal it is to promote awareness and appreciation of the art of making original prints, books, hand-made paper, and drawings. It is the largest national printmaking organization in the United States holding biennial conferences that present panels, speakers, exhibitions and demonstrations addressing issues that relate to artists working in all printmaking media, book arts and paper arts.As founding board member of the recently established Rocky Mountain Printmaking Alliance (RMPA, legally recognized in 2016) I was asked by MAPC Conference Organizer, Professor Mark Ritchie to both curate an exhibition of RMPA members work, and organize a panel introducing RMPA to MAPC on a full Saturday dedicated to bringing the two printmaking bodies together. A unique opportunity to promote RMPA I began organizing in Dec 2017. The exhibition involves 22 printmakers from the 11 RMPA states, and the panel represents the interest of the entire RMPA body. This project increases my national profile and standing in the printmaking world and thereby increases the visibility of the printmaking program at the University of Arizona.
