Biography

Dr. Donald Hamann, Professor of Music Education and Director of the Institute for Innovation in String Music Teaching at the University of Arizona, teaches string pedagogy and graduate research, teacher education, and statistics. He has presented workshops and clinics across the United States for the American String Teachers Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the National School Orchestra Association. He founded and is the Executive Director of the UA String Project. Hamann, who has published extensively in national and international string, education, and research journals was Editor and founder of the Journal of String Research/String Research Journal. He also served as Editor of the NSOA Bulletin, Contributions to Music Education, and String Vibrations, the Colorado ASTA State Newsletter. Dr. Hamann served on the JRME National Editorial Board, the MEJ National Editorial Board, and the ASTA National Editorial Board, was President of the Arizona ASTA with NSOA and chaired the ASTA National Research Committee. Hamann's latest book On Staff: A Practical Guide to Starting Your Career in a University Music Department was released in May of 2013 by the Oxford University Press. Another of his books, Strategies for Teaching Strings: Building a Successful String and Orchestra Program, is currently in its 3rd edition and is also published by the Oxford University Press.

Hamann earned his degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied with Phyllis Young, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He taught at the Eanes Independent School District, Austin, Texas, where he created their orchestral program (featured at the 2008 MidWest Band and Orchestra Conference), the University of Northern Colorado, where he founded the UNC String Project, and Kent State University.

Most recently he was the first recipient of Outstanding Achievement in String Research Award. Presented by the American String Teachers Association, the award is given to recognize long-term excellence in string research to a researcher whose work has contributed significantly to scholarship in string education.
