Biography
Dr. Elizabeth Schauer accepted an appointment as Associate Director of Choral Activities at the University of Arizona in fall 2004. An award-winning educator, Dr. Schauer directs Symphonic Choir and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting, literature and methods. She is in demand as an adjudicator, clinician, presenter and conductor throughout the United States, including recently for 2016 performances with the National High School Women’s Honor Choir at Carnegie Hall, and the 2016 New Mexico All-State Mixed Choir. Choirs under her direction have been selected by audition and invited to perform on local, state and regional conferences of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), College Music Society (CMS) and American Guild of Organists. In addition, her choirs have been featured on the ACDA National YouTube Channel and the Community Concerts Series of KUAT-FM Classical Radio, and are regularly invited to collaborate, notably with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Arizona Symphony and the UA Wind Ensemble. Repertoire embraces choral and choral-orchestral masterworks of the western canon from the Middle Ages through the present, up to and including new works dedicated to and commissioned for her ensembles, as well as the music of our time and from a variety of cultures. Symphonic Choir was awarded second place in The American Prize competition for the college/university category in 2017. Dr. Schauer has presented sessions at the national conferences of ACDA, Presbyterian Association of Musicians and CMS; regional conferences of ACDA, and state conferences of ACDA and NAfME. Former students are active as music educators at public and private schools, churches, colleges and universities through the country, and have been accepted into respected graduate schools and programs for continued study. Dr. Schauer just completed her term as President of Arizona ACDA, and holds degrees from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Westminster Choir College and University of Michigan.

Women Composers of Choral Repertoire
I contributed multiple chapters for an upcoming publication of the book Women Composers of Choral Repertoire, which will be released by GIA Publications in 2025. I authored 11 articles and co-authored 2 others. Although most of my articles were done in 2023, in 2024 I had the opportunity to recommend students/former students to pick up the last few composers needed for the book. I will be part of the interest session at the 2025 National ACDA Conference as part of the release of this groundbreaking publication in our field. It will be a transformative resource for choral curricula worldwide. For me, this is a crowning achievement of my career.. In Women Composers of Choral Repertoire(pp TBA). GIA Publications.

Marissa did the large majority of the organizational work. I did some organizational work and also led the members of Arizona and Symphonic Choirs as one of the groups that was part of this event. Most importantly, I handled the fundraising component of this event and pr related to it. My initial idea was to have a $100 sponsor for each group. I ended up landing an event sponsor who paid $1000 and 8 individual group sponsors at $100 each for total revenue of $1800.The event was wildly successful with around 650 participating and immediate expressions from many for this to happen again. We will try to figure out how we can streamline the event to require less staff time, and are considering offering again in the fall as an annual event.

I organized and conducted on this concert that was a collaboration of UA Symphonic and Arizona Choirs with Arizona Repertory Singers. We sang a diverse program to a full and responsive house. For this performance I also contracted and worked with two local gospel musicians, who came to teach the choir a historical gospel chorus by Herbert Brewster, and who also performed this with us - playing piano and singing as a soloist. It was a very rich collaboration.

- Schauer, E. R. (2020, July). University of Arizona Choral Studies Distinguished Speakers Series. Online archive.More infoThis summer I founded the University of Arizona Choral Studies Distinguished Speakers Series, featuring content-area specialists, each of which presents a fifty-minute lecture on historical repertoire composed by under-represented populations, or relevant movements and traditions not typically included in the choral curriculum. The purpose is to intentionally create a more inclusive and diverse course of study, with these composers and movements embedded in the primary curriculum of choral literature. When possible, content-area specialists are from the same populations as the topic on which they are presenting. The speakers also recommend listening, scores and readings that students should examine in advance of the lecture and these are included in the topic folder. These lectures and materials will then be archived and made available for free to everyone - they may be used in courses, for extra-curricular activities, or for personal edification. It is hoped that these lectures also will generate interest in more scholarship on these composers and topics. The first cohort of lectures that are being recorded in the 2020-2021 academic year are on Black American music of the oral tradition, 19th Century European Jewish liturgical music, Carribean/Latin American Baroque music and the music of the nun composers of the Italian convents in the Renaissance and Baroque. The first two lectures have been submitted, and the first of those may be found at: https://choral.music.arizona.edu/distinguished-speakers-series/
- Schauer, E. R. (2021, Beginning January). Distinguished Student and Alumni/ae Speakers Series. online.More infoAs the choral conducting graduate students and alumni/ae guests began presenting on the new slate of topics in the choral literature class, it became apparent that this population had the capacity to contribute in a significant way to the Distinguished Speakers Series described above. I wrote and received another grant to offer $150 stipends to invited speakers from among these presenters. The first invited speakers already are submitting lecture that will be available on the website soon, in the same format as the primary series. This immediate injection of content for the series will cause it to quickly have a robust set of offerings. Shekela Wanyama has submitted a lecture on the music of African-American female composers Undine Smith Moore and Courtney Bryan, and Nicky Manlove has submitted a lecture on Craig Hella Johnson's oratorio "Considering Matthew Shepard." The quality of the lectures is outstanding - these will contribute to greater accessibility to study of these works and composers and also will bring prestige to the University of Arizona choral program.
