- Setzer, G. L. (2019, Spring). Foundations in Flux. Foundations in Art: Theory and Education Conference. Columbus, OH: Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE).More infoUsing the finds allocated to me through the CFA Small Grants program, I presented at this year’s biannual Foundations in Art: Theory & Education (FATE) conference, Foundations in Flux, Columbus, Ohio from April 4th to April 6th, 2019.My presentation, “With Your Heart on Your Sleeve, Your Foot in Your Mouth, and Your Head in the Clouds,” was part of a larger panel discussion on creating exceptionally meaningful classroom experiences in foundations curriculum. The panel was organized by Professor Jenna Frye from the Maryland Institute College of Art and Professor Chris Kienke from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Other co-panelists included Elissa Armstrong (Virginia Commonwealth University), Anna Fidler (Oregon State University), Robert McCann (Michigan State University), and Christopher McEvoy (State University of New York at Oswego). In my portion of the panel, I focused on strategies to empower freshmen to embrace their vulnerability and trust one another. From here, the end goals are to aggressively welcome students to our academic community, and to lead them to new modes of thinking. My presentation addresses how, unsuspectedly, we can create meaningful experiences with performance art that both embolden and surprise our students. The panel was well-received and it was great promotion for the First Year Experience Division, the School of Art, and the University of Arizona, bringing us further national attention and helping to boost our reputation as a cutting-edge research school.

- Setzer, G. L. (2017, Spring). Beyond The Core. Foundations in Art: Theory and Education Conference. Kansas City, MO: Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE).More infoUsing the finds allocated to me through the CFA Small Grants program, I presented at this year’s annual Foundations in Art: Theory & Education (FATE) conference, Beyond the Core, in Kansas City, Missouri from April 6th to April 8th, 2017.My presentation was part of a larger panel discussion on foundations curriculum called Project Share Mixtape. The panel was organized and moderated by Jacksonville University Professor, Lily Kuonen. Other co-panelists included artist-educators Stacy Isenbarger (President of FATE), Erin Hoffman, Nick Bontrager, and Meredith Starr. My talk, “Genre Pirates,” delineated a unique approach that I have developed to structuring non-narrative video art projects for the 100-level. The approach builds upon students’ existing familiarity with film and television while simultaneously illustrating the critical role of audio and video editing. Working in small groups for the pre-production and production stages, the students are then asked to undertake the post-production (editing the video and audio) individually—and they must produce a non-narrative work with the footage. While the concerted group effort is already completed at this stage, and the students are working individually, the group benefits from seeing the four to five separate edits of the same footage from each of their group members. The various edits are compared and contrasted in the final (and in-progress) critiques, in a dialog that actively highlights the impacts of minor and major editing decisions. The project is an effective and powerful introduction to non-linear editing. The panel was well-received and it was great promotion for the First Year Experience Division, the School of Art, and the University of Arizona, bringing us further national attention and helping to boost our reputation as a cutting-edge research school.
- Setzer, G. L. (2015, Spring). Tectonic Shifts: Breaking New Ground. Foundations in Art: Theory and Education Conference. Indianapolis, Indiana: Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE).More infoAs part of the 2015 Foundations in Art: Theory & Education (FATE) conference, "Tectonic Shifts: Breaking New Ground," in Indianapolis, Indiana, I presented a presentation called, “Structuring The Astructural & Accounting For The Invisible.” My presentation was part of a panel discussion called "This Is No Shotgun Wedding." The panel was organized by University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Professor, Christopher Kienke, and also included presentations by art professors Lily Kuonen and Meaghan Dee.My individual presentation centered on how we hold students accountable for content in our First Year Experience program—examining best practices for facilitating (and structuring) conceptual development well beyond a mere conversations between student and mentor. It was great promotion for the First Year Experience Division, the School of Art, and the University of Arizona, bringing us further national attention and helping to boost our reputation as a cutting-edge research school. The conference spanned from March 25th to March 28th, 2015.

- MOCA Monster Drawing Rally: A Live Drawing Event; July 2019; MOCA Curator, Ginger Shulick, invited me to participate in MOCA's first Monster Drawing Rally. The event was a fundraiser for MOCA, in which over 60 artists made drawings in front of the audience.I created a performance work for the event that resulted in a drawing. It wasn't really an exhibition, so I put it here in this aptly titled section, "Scholarly and Creative Work - Other."
