Vocal cord dysfunction: Does laryngeal adduction on laryngoscopy predict disease severity and response to laryngeal retraining therapy?. Laryngoscope investigative otolaryngology, 9(6), e70039.More infoVocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is a complex disorder characterized by episodic adduction of the vocal folds during inspiration and expiration, which can lead to dyspnea, wheezing, cough, and acute-onset respiratory distress. Currently, there is a lack of standardized criteria among treating physicians across multiple disciplines, including otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, allergists, and speech and language pathologists, for diagnosis and treatment of VCD, although laryngeal-respiratory retraining therapy (LRT) has emerged as the preferred treatment modality.

- Demirjian, N. L., Lever, A., & Yip, H. (2024). Identifying Practice Gaps Among Otolaryngology Providers for the Treatment of Chronic Cough. OTO open, 8(2), e143.More infoIncreasing evidence over the last decade suggests that many cases of unexplained chronic cough (UCC) have a neurogenic etiology, with laryngeal hypersensitivity (LH) being identified as a key mechanism. Official guidelines since 2015 have adopted use of neuromodulators and adjuvant speech therapy as a result, but historically implementation of guidelines is slow. Our survey aimed to investigate gaps in diagnosis and management practices of otolaryngology providers in caring for patients with UCC.

OTO open, 8(4), e70033.More infoPeristomal subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a common sequela after tracheostomy, with severe cases precluding decannulation. Predictors of decannulation success in these patients following endoscopic intervention are not well studied. The aim of this study is to investigate predictors of successful decannulation and inform treatment decisions.

American journal of otolaryngology, 45(5), 104412.More infoNeurogenic cough (NC) is thought to be related to sensory neuropathy in the hypopharynx and larynx. Defined as a cough persisting longer than 8 weeks refractory to standard therapy, it is a diagnosis of exclusion when other common etiologies (asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), medication side effects) are ruled out. It affects roughly 11 % of Americans and can negatively impact quality of life.

American journal of otolaryngology, 45(1), 104055.More infoSubglottic and tracheal stenosis (SGTS) in adults is an acquired or idiopathic condition that can lead to dyspnea, and even life-threatening airway obstruction. Endoscopic techniques have advanced and largely eclipsed open surgery, with open surgery now reserved for refractory cases (Hseu et al., 2013; Feinstein et al., 2017). Currently, there is no accepted guideline for the endoscopic treatment of SGTS. Thus, the aim of the present study is to examine the impact of various clinical and pathological characteristics on outcomes to endoscopic treatment in a cohort of SGTS patients.
