Biography
Janet L. Hawley received her B.A. in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara, her M.S. from the University of Arizona, and her clinical doctorate (ClinScD) from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Her expertise lies in the clinical management of neurogenic communication disorders in adults, including treatment of communication-cognitive deficits in traumatic brain injury, language impairment due to aphasia, and speech disorders from progressive neurological diseases. She has a passion for transgender voice, as well as the assessment and treatment of voice disorders (e.g. the LSVT program). Additionally, she specializes in accent modification and recently developed a course for UA students, staff, and professors who desire modification of their accent. In the past, Dr. Hawley worked in medical settings and served as a manager of an interdisciplinary brain injury treatment program. Currently Dr. Hawley’s greatest love is working in the clinic with graduate clinicians where she coordinates the Aphasia Program and facilitates off-campus practicum placements (adult agencies and medical settings) for graduate speech-language pathology students.

Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation. doi:10.1016/j.jvoice.2021.09.001More infoMotivated by practice and feedback principles of motor learning, a hybrid clinic-home protocol for voice feminization was developed to minimize the role of SLPs to 1 of supervision and professional guidance and to maximize learning during independent practice apart from intervention sessions. The purpose was to explore the effectiveness and acceptability of the innovative service delivery..This single-subject changing criterion design included four transgender women who completed a 10-week hybrid clinic-home voice intervention program delivered via 30 -minute weekly in-clinic sessions and a technology-supported home program. The program was client-centered and capitalized on principles of motor learning in that it incorporated frequent practice with intermittent, knowledge-of-result feedback. Participants' desired outcomes were measured using acoustics, self and listener ratings of audio samples, and a program evaluation questionnaire..Average speaking fundamental frequency of phrases and picture descriptions gradually increased into the 170-220 Hz range for all except one participant. All four transgender women were perceived to sound more feminine following treatment compared to baseline. Participants found the in-clinic sessions useful, the app easy to use, and noted limited fatigue or discomfort..Four transwomen met their goals using this hybrid clinic-home service delivery format. Further investigations may elucidate key factors of the success achieved in the current study by designing comparison delivery models and including people from other populations.

Perspectives of the ASHA Special Interest Groups, 3(3), 72-86. doi:https://doi.org/10.1044/persp3.SIG14.72More infoSpeech-language pathologists (SLPs) have a unique opportunity to engage diverse youth and adults in developing their authentic voices and sharing experiences. Although they may not necessarily be employed in programs with a specific LGBTQ+ focus, they are likely to work with LGBTQ+ youth and adults. The article begins with a discussion of how many people identify as LGBTQ+ and why a focus on LGBTQ+ affirmative human services practice is needed. The 2nd section of the article provides an overview of key concepts in working with LGBTQ+ individuals. Case studies of 2 LGBTQ+ youth who experienced academic and personal challenges conclude the article. The article includes an appendix listing several simple ways for SLPs to engage in LGBTQ+ affirmative human services practice.

The Journal of speech and hearing disorders, 47(4), 413-5. doi:10.1044/jshd.4704.413More infoA noninvasive method for determining a client's ability to generate respiratory driving pressure is described. This method is an off-spring, of simpler form, from a method previously offered in this journal. The key to its simplification is the use of a pressure-indication device that can be constructed from a small collection of items found around the house. The usefulness of this off-spring method is discussed with regard to evaluation and management concerns and its advantages over its parent method are considered.
