The Phenomenology of Experiencing Oneself Online: Critical Dimensions of Identity and Language Use in Virtual Spaces
. In Technology and the Psychology of Second Language Learners and Users.. Palgrave Macmillan, Cham. doi:10.1007/978-3-030-34212-8_11More infoThe emerging arrays of online environments readily accessible constitute primary settings through which routine constructions of identity are curated through the use of second language (L2) as a tool of social interaction and self-identification in virtual networks. Little is known, however, about the effects of such virtual experiences on the learners’ perception of themselves as L2 speakers. This lack of research attention to the psychological contexts of such experiences has resulted in a paucity of knowledge about what motivates L2 learners to construct and negotiate their speaker positions in virtual social spaces. This chapter proposes to conceptualize virtual social experience in phenomenological terms; that is, as a subjectively lived life moment that carries personal meaning and significance for further individual development. - Klimanova, L. (2019). The Phenomenology of Experiencing Oneself Online: Second Language Learners’ Perspective.. In Technology and The Psychology of Second Language Learners and Users.(pp 274-301). London, UK: Palgrave Macmillan. doi:10.1007/978-3-030-34212-8More infoThe chapter proposal was accepted in October, 2017. The volume is published and available for purchase in the fall of 2019. Putting local on the MAP: A model for engaging foreign language students with local cultures
. Foreign Language Annals, 54(1), 158-184. doi:10.1111/flan.12493More infoCulture in the teaching and learning of foreign languages tends to be stereotypical and monolithic, marginalizing the diversity of local cultures and practices and resulting in a monocultural and monolingual bias. Expanding on the ACTFL Cultures and Comparisons Standards, the current article presents the MAPS model for Exploring Local Cultures aimed at engaging students with local products, practices, and perspectives through the creation, exchange, and analysis of digital artifacts of local cultures. The article demonstrates how a complex pedagogical model can be constructed from existing research and theory as well as how to implement it: in addition to presenting the model and its underlying literature, the article details its implementation in two classes. - Klimanova, L., Merrill, J., & Spasova, S.
