Creative Works

  • Senora Tortuga; Sound; October; For the second year, there was not a sound designer available for the etc... show.  This time, I had a little better sense of how the sound designer operates.  I researched Mexican and South American folk music to use in the play, along with other music, such as the sound track from FRIDA.  I also had to find abstract music for the dream sequences that would communicate that there were monsters, like Cucuy, but would not be too intense for a children's show.  This play also involved a lot of live sounds generated by the cast.  I found the instruments to use and Matthew Copley, the director, made the final decisions on when and where they would appear.  All in all, the sound represented a good collaboration between Matthew and me.
  • "Red Ridin' in the Hood and Dos Cuentos"; Play; October; I came across a collection of European folk tales recast with Latino characters and settings: RED RIDIN' IN THE HOOD AND OTHER CUENTOS by Patricia Santos-Marcantonio.  Two of my students, Kelsey Redmond and Diego Lopez, and I thought some of these stories would be suitable for etc...  The author was excited about the prospect and we arranged to adapt three stories.  Each of us selected one story and, over the summer, we wrote the first draft of our scripts.  Diego chose "The Piper of Harmonia" and Kelsey "Red Ridin' in the Hood".  I helped Kelsey and Diego with revisions to their scripts.  In the fall each of us directed our own story, but because Kelsey and Diego also appeared in their stories, I also was an outside eye for their work. I chose to adapt "Blanca Nieves and the Seven Vaqueritos", based on Snow White.  Because we added in as much Spanish as we could, I changed the title to "Blanca Nieves y los Siete Vaqueritos".  When I first read the story, I thought it would be fun to use puppets since that could be a clever way for three actors to be seven little cowboys/vaqueritos.  In the end, most of the characters is the story were depicted by puppets.  Since Kelsey's and Diego's stories were both memory plays with an older character telling their own story, I followed their lead and used narrators--one was very dramatic "Telemundo" style and one more practical, the by-play between the characters turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the performance. A million years ago when I taught high school, I used to develop a number of adaptations especially for readers' theatre performances.  It was a lot fun to revisit those creative juices once again.  Since I also directed my story, I made my directing debut after 18 years on the faculty!
  • Technical Report; NA; January 2011; Lifelong Impact: Adult perceptions of their high school theatre and/or speech participation.; It is typical with large research projects to develop a technical report of the entire study.  This is not always published.  It is the document from which all other papers and conference presentations are developed.  This monograph was completed in January and has been posted to various websites and distributed to colleagues when requested.
