Biography
Marissa Olegario is the Assistant Professor of Bassoon at The University of Arizona. Known for her compelling and personality-driven performances, she enjoys an active and diverse performance schedule as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician. Marissa has appeared in concerts at Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center under conductors such as James Conlon, John Adams, Peter Oundjin, Rafael Payere and Leonard Slatkin. In an effort to marry a variety of art forms, Marissa has collaborated with the Martha Graham Dance Company, performed film scores including Jeff Beal's original score to Buster Keaton's silent film The General, and partnered with Dance for Parkinson's to provide live music for people suffering from Parkinson's disease. Constantly seeking new artistic possibilities, Marissa has premiered works by Jay Vosk, Szilárd Mezei, and Shuying Li and has commissioned new works by Shuying Li, Sarah Gibson, Yuanyuan (Kay) He, and John Steinmetz.
Marissa was a semi-finalist for the 2016 Matthew Ruggiero International Woodwind Competition and was recognized as a recipient of the Yale School of Music Alumni Prize. An active chamber musician, she has appeared at the Phoenix Chamber Society Winter Series, the Norfolk Chamber Festival, and the clasclas festival in Spain where she performed with former concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker Guy Braunstein. She actively subs with the acclaimed Breaking Winds Bassoon Quartet and regularly performs and teaches in the Southwest region with the Arizona Wind Quintet. She is heard playing second bassoon on two newly released Naxos produced albums: Beethoven: Music for Winds featuring David Shifrin, Stephen Taylor, Frank Morelli, and William Purvis and A Vision of Time and Eternity: Songs and Chamber Music, featuring unrecorded works by Welsh composer William Mathias.
As one of the 2017-2018 Orpheus Chamber Orchestra Performance Fellows, Marissa participated in the organization’s program which provided mentorship and professional development for emerging artists from underrepresented backgrounds. Marissa acknowledges the systemic inequity in the classical music industry. She recognizes her essential responsibility as an educator and vows to actively work towards enacting change.
A graduate of the Yale School of Music (MM) and Northwestern University (BM), Marissa’s major teachers are Christopher Millard, Lewis Kirk, and Frank Morelli. She regularly presents master classes and performances at universities and performing arts schools around the United States.

- Rain Song: Performing for the Sonoran Desert; May 2022
- Faculty Artist Recital Wind Sand and Grey Sand; March 2022
- Faculty Artist Recital: Arizona Wind Quintet; August 2022; Three imaginative works for wind quintet chart a journey through three very different sound worlds. Reena Esmail's The Light is the Same (2017), a fascinating exploration of two contrasting Hindustani raags, embodies Rumi's notion that "The lamps may be different / but the light is the same." Audacious rhythms and otherworldly colors characterize Mario Lavista's Cinco Danzas Breves (1994), already a classic of the contemporary Mexican chamber music repertoire. The program concludes with Dream States (2020) by Fred Fox School of Music alum Colin Nossek (BM '20). This deeply impressive work charms with its inventive melodies and evocative depictions of the liminal states between waking, sleeping, and dreaming -- with several movements taking inspiration from bluegrass.
- Arizona Wind Quintet Spring Recital; April 2023; Arizona Wind Quintet Faculty Artist Recital
- Earth Day in the Arts District; April 2022
- Rude Moods; As part of a consortium, I commissioned this piece of 12 movements for unaccompanied bassoon.
- The Illusion of Separateness; Co-commissioned a bassoon concerto for solo bassoon and string orchestra. The piece is about 18 minutes long, a continuous movement with a cadenza. The purpose is to create a work that is accessible to several ability levels while still being enjoyable for both performer and audience.
- mizar a & b; Projection design; Commissioned New York City based projection designer to create a video projection to accompany a piece entitled Mizar a & b for bassoon and bass clarinet by Austrian composer Johannes Berauer. The projection conceptualized outer space, stars, and galaxies. This mirrored Berauer's vision for his composition which was inspired by Mizar, a quadrupel star system in the constellation of Ursus Major consisting of two binary stars and is in a distance of 78 light years from earth.
- After Rain; Solo bassoon; Commissioned a new work for solo bassoon by Chinese composer, Shuying Li. World Premiere: October 28, 2018 at the Arete Venue and Gallery in Brooklyn, New York.Arizona Premiere: November 1, 2018 at the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music Holsclaw Hall

We hope to collaborate with the Desert Museum for a performance and exhibit of the works.
- Arizona Wind Quintet Los Angeles Tour; Inspired by their week-long residency at UNAM's Facultad de Música in Mexico City in the winter of 2018, the Arizona Wind Quintet created an eclectic series of performances paying tribute to the works of living Mexican composers and the extraordinary chamber music scene of MExico's cosmopolitan capital city. The tour consisted of master classes, interactive community events, student composer readings, and concerts in a variety of performance spaces. Please see the attached document for more details. Johanna and I served as the main coordinators of the trip, connecting with our Southern California network, scheduling school visits and concerts, organizing all travel details (airfare, car, itinerary.)
