Biography

Norman Weinberg is Professor of Music and the Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Arizona. He has performed as the principal timpanist/principal percussionist with the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra and as principal timpanist with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Evansville Philharmonic, the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, and the Leonard Bernstein Festival Orchestra. Currently he performs with the Arizona Opera and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. These, and additional musical experiences, have given him the opportunity to perform under the batons of David Amram, Enrique Batiz, Luciano Berio, Leonard Bernstein, Gary Bertini, Ogan D'Narc, Cornelius Eberhardt, Lukas Foss, Alberto Ginastera, Christopher Keene, Cal Stewart Kellogg, Igor Markevitch, Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, John Nelson, Daniel Oren, Krzysztof Penderecki, Jose Serebrier, Robert Shaw, George Singer, Leonard Slatkin, Walter Susskind, and many others.

Norm has performed and presented seminars at many regional, national, and international conventions including the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, The Texas Association of Music Schools Convention, the Tennessee Wind Ensemble Conference, the Ontario �Celebration of the Drum�, the Day of Percussion Festivals in Arizona, California, Kansas, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah, the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia National Convention, the Rhythm Sticks Festival in London, the �Toronto 2000: Musical Intersections� conference, and four Percussive Arts Society International Conventions.

A prolific author, Norm has published over 250 articles in journals including: Drum!, Modern Drummer, Drums and Drumming, Rhythm, Percussive Notes, Percussive Notes Research Edition, Keyboard Magazine, Music and Computers, The Instrumentalist, and Home Recording Newsletter. He currently holds the position of Contributing Technology Editor for Drum! magazine, and served as the Technology Editor for Percussive Notes for 12 years. In addition, he has several compositions published by Southern Music Corporation. His text, The Electronic Drummer, is a part of the Modern Drummer Library and is distributed by Hal Leonard Publishing. His most recent book, Guide to Standardized Drumset Notation, has set a world-wide standard and is published by the Percusssive Arts Society. Both books are distributed by Hal Leonard Publications.

Educational achievements include the prestigious Performer�s Certificate from Indiana University, where Norm received the Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance with Honors and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree. He has studied with several outstanding teachers during his career including George Boberg, Jerry Carlyss, George Gaber, William Roberts, Ben Udell, Gary Werdesheim, Charmaine Asher Wiley, and William Zickos. Norm is a Yamaha Performing Artist, a Vic Firth Artist, a Zildjian Educational Clinician, a Grover Pro Percussion Artist, and a Remo Gold Level Endorser. In 1992, Norman was the featured soloist with the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, performing the United States Premiere of Bertold Hummel�s Konzert f�r Schlagzeug und Orchester, op.70.

Norman created and helped to establish the �World Percussion Network� which later became �pas.org�. At PASIC �94, he was given the �Outstanding Service Award� from the Percussive Arts Society. In 2000, Norman was invited to present the Keynote Address at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention's New Music Research Day. The address was titled Turn On-Plug In-Groove Out. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Percussive Arts Society from 1998-2004. In 2002, Norman was honored to be the recipient of the Maestro Award from the University of Arizona School of Music, awarded �in recognition of his students' outstanding achievements�.

This piece, entitled “Ripper” was given its world premiere during CrossTalk’s performance at the “Toronto 2000: Musical Intersections” Conference on November 3, 2000.
  • Numerolalia; Electronic Percussion Ensemble; October; I arranged for a commission for an original musical composition for CrossTalk, The University of Arizona Electronic Percussion Ensemble, by Kip Haahaim. This piece, entitled “Numerlalia” was given its world premiere during CrossTalk’s performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention on October 30, 1999.

Designed to be performed with a single DrumKat controller and a single sound module, this work will be premiered during my Faculty Artist Recital in January 2000.
  • Firedance; Electronic Percussion Ensemble; October; I arranged the piece, "Firedance" for the Electronic Percussion Ensemble for their performance at the Show Me GALA event for the College for Fine Arts

This piece, entitled "Mrs. Gone", was commissioned for CrossTalk's showcase performance at PASIC 2003. I was responsible for arranging and editing portions of the composition to fit the ensemble.

Below are some of the comments that I have received so far:Here's what "Surface Tension" composer, David Hollinden, has to say about this recording: "Norm and Todd have created a fine recording. Their instruments sound good and their phrasing is articulate, allowing the small details in the music to come through. And they control the dynamics such that they can maintain energy and drive throughout the entire piece. They have captured the spirit of the music in a fine performance."This is what "Voyager" composer, Richard McCandelss, had to say about this recording: "It's rare that a composer has a recording of one of his works that conveys his vision of that work, and this is what Norman Weinberg has done with "Voyager." His interpretation and performance are precisely what I intended. I consider his recording to be the definitive performance."   • Hadrian's Wall; Electronic Percussion Ensemble; October; My composition, "Hadrian's Wall" was written for CrossTalk's showcase performance at the 2003 Percussive Arts Society International Convention held in Louisville, TN in November 2003.
  • WebRhythms; Vic Firth, Inc.; October; http://www.vicfirth.com/education/features/webrhythms/intro.html WebRhythms consists of twenty lessons that teach the basics about reading rhythms to percussionists. Each lesson consists of a written article, several musical examples, and a full-length exercise with audio enhancement. I wrote all of the text, and type-set all of the music. This is a featured area of the vicfirth.com website and has been an ongoing project during the entire year.
  • Web Rhythms; vicfirth.com; October; Web Rhythms; Web Rhythms consists of twenty lessons that teach the basics about reading rhythms to drummers. Each lesson consists of a written article, several musical examples, and a full-length exercise with audio enhancement. I wrote all of the text, and type-set all of the music.   • 20 Lessons in Reading Rhythms; October; WebRhythms; I complete the text, musical examples, and exercises for a 20-lesson rhythmic reading project. Thom Martin (who was awarded a Triestman Grant for help with this project), was instrumental in posting these materials on the Web and designing the front-end of the site that houses the information.   • Perfect Circle; Electronic Percussion Ensemble; March; I arranged a work by dj.Fremen & dj.Alar.J entitled "Perfect Circle" for CrossTalk, The University of Arizona Electronic Percussion Ensemble. The piece was premiered at the CrossTalk concert on May 6, 2006.
  • Discipline; Electronic Percussion Ensemble; March; I arranged the composition “Discipline” by the group King Crimson for the Electronic Percussion Ensemble. This arrangement was performed on the “Rosewood and Friends” concert on 4/21/99.
  • New Genesis; Electronic Percussion Ensemble; March; I composed a work entitled "New Genesis" for CrossTalk, The University of Arizona Electronic Percussion Ensemble. The piece was premiered at the CrossTalk concert on May 6, 2006.
  • War In America; Electronic Percussion Ensemble; March; I composed a work entitled "War In America" for CrossTalk, The University of Arizona Electronic Percussion Ensemble. The piece was premiered at the CrossTalk concert on May 6, 2006.
  • Percussion Handbook; None; March; I edited and re-worked the Percussion Department Handbook.
  • The Electronic Percussion Ensemble; Music; March; The Electronic Percussion Ensemble is now a performing ensemble in the SOMAD. This group took a tremendous amount of time to create, organize, arrange, and rehearse. Ensemble members include graduate, undergraduate, and faculty members: Norman Weinberg, Robin Horn, Bob Brudvig, Malcolm Miranda, Thomas Martin, Jason Silberschlag, and Daniel Samson.
  • 101; Electronic Percussion Ensemble (CrossTalk); March; This piece was composed for CrossTalk during my sabbatical and was premiered on CrossTalk's performances at Doolen and Townsend Middle Schools on December 13, 2004.
  • Beijing; Electronic Percussion Solo with Computer; March; This piece was composed for my own performances and will be premiered on my Faculty Artist Recital on February 15, 2005.

  • Three Spirits; Timpani Solo with DrumKAT accompaniment; March; This work was created for my student, Beth Caucci. She premiered "Three Spirits" at her Master's Recital in Spring 2003. To my knowledge, this is the first composition for this performance medium: timpani with live electronic accompaniment.
  • The WPN Percussive Notes Project; World Wide Web; March; Though my efforts, the Percussive Arts Society and the University of Arizona Libraries have entered into an agreement to work on a project of offering back issues of the journal "Percussive Notes" on the World Wide Web.
  • Pieces of Eight; Electronic Percussion Ensemble; June; "Pieces of Eight" is a work that I arranged for CrossTalk - The UA Electronic Percussion Group. It was composed by Neil Peart. It is planned to be premiered at the CrossTalk Concert on May 6, 2006.
  • Todd Hammes - Music for Percussion; Compact Audio Disk; June; I was an integral member of this recording of music by percussionist, Todd Hammes. I performed on four of the works on this recording.
