Biography
Dr. Mohammad Pessarakli is a Research Professor and a Teaching Faculty in the School of Plant Sciences, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, USA. His work at the University of Arizona include research and extension services as well as teaching Plants and Our World online course and teaching courses in Turfgrass Science, Management, and Stress Physiology. He is the Editor of the Handbook of Plant and Crop Stress and the Handbook of Plant and Crop Physiology (both titles published by, formerly Marcel Dekker, Inc., currently Taylor and Francis Group, CRC Press), Handbook of Photosynthesis, Handbook of Turfgrass Management and Physiology, and Handbook of Cucurbits. He has written over rwenty book chapters, Editor-in-Chief of the Advances in Plants & Agriculture Research Journal, Editorial Board member of Journal of Plant Nutrition and Communications in Soil Science and Plant Analysis as well as Journal of Agricultural Technology, and a member of the Book Review Committee of Crop Science Society of America, and Reviewer of the Crop Science, Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, and HortScience Journals. He is the author or co-author of hundred eighty five (185) journal articles and fifty five (55) trade magazine articles. Dr. Pessarakli is an active member of the Agronomy Society of America, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America, among others. He is an executive Board member of the American Association of the University Professors (AAUP), Arizona Chapter. Dr. Pessarakli is a well known Internationally recognized Scientist and Scholar and an esteemed member (invited) of Sterling Who’s Who, Marques Who’s Who, Strathmore Who’s Who, Madison Who’s Who, and Continental Who’s Who as well as numerous honor societies (i.e., Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Pi Lambda Theta, Alpha Alpha Chapter). He is a Certified Professional Agronomist and Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPAg/SS), designated by the American Registry of the Certified Professionals in Agronomy, Crop Science, and Soil Science. Dr. Pessarakli is a United Nations Consultant in Agriculture for underdeveloped countries. He received the B.S. degree (1977) in Environmental Resources in Agriculture and the M.S. degree (1978) in Soil Management and Crop Production from Arizona State University, Tempe, and the Ph.D. degree (1981) in Soil and Water Science from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Dr. Pessarakli’s environmental stress research work and expertise on plants and crops is internationally recognized.

Journal of Food Agriculture & Environment, 7(2), 736-739.More infoThis investigation was conducted to study the effects of pitting and contour furrowing techniques on rangelands evaluation in the Sistan Baluchistan province of Iran. This region consists of 17,0431 km 2 of arid to semi-arid rangeland, located in the southeastern section of Iran. It is one of the driest regions of the country, which is home to 11.4% of the population. With the annual rainfall of the region ranging between 50-120 mm, methods of decreasing run-off, controlling soil erosion and water conservation through the utilization of pitting and contour furrowing are critical to restoring the delicate ecological balance of the rangelands in this region. In this study, twelve 20 m × 40 m plots with a slope of 3-5% were designed to compare two treatments, pitting and contour furrowing with control fields. The data indicated that the effects of runoff, water penetration and increased soil moisture in those plots utilizing contour furrowing and pitting were statistically significant. In the control fields, the amount of runoff and sedimentation increased compared to that in the plots utilizing pitting and contour furrowing. Utilization of these constructions in harvesting rain water has been effective in controlling soil erosion. Successfully increasing water penetration and soil moisture content, deterioration of plant cover was reversed and forage production was improved. Furthermore, contour furrowing promoted propagation of Hammada saliconica species, a desirable plant species for both soil conservation and livestock grazing in the region.

In addition, these areas often have high evaporation rates, which can encourage concentration of salts at the soil surface. The presence of a caliche horizon and/or a cemented hardpan layer at varying depths, plus insufficient precipitation for leaching often adds to the salt accumulation in soils. Newly established irrigation projects, with improper planning and management practices, may also add salts to soils. However, soil salinity problems are present in nearly every irrigated area of the world and also occur on non‐irrigated croplands and rangelands. Thus, virtually no land is immune from salinization. Therefore, for sustaining life on earth, control of these problems and finding new ways to utilize these extensive saline soils and water resources, at least for agricultural purposes, are vital and urgent.
