Biography
Dr. Plane is Professor of Geography and Regional Development at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he has served on the faculty since 1981 and as Department Head from 1990 to 1997. He is a Fellow of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI) and the Western Regional Science Association. In 2013 he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award of the AAG Population Specialty Group. He has served as both President and Chair of the North American Regional Science Council, and is a Past President of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers (APCG), the Western Regional Science Association, the Pacific Regional Science Conference Organization, and AAG’s Population Specialty Group.
Awarded his B.A. summa cum laude in geography with an urban studies concentration from Dartmouth College (1976), Plane earned his M.A. (1977) and Ph.D. (1981) in regional science from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on population geography, U.S. migration and settlement, the role of the life course in shaping individuals’ activity patterns, and methods for modeling temporal change in spatial interaction systems. In 2001–2002, and again in 2011, he was a Visiting Researcher at the U.S. Census Bureau, where in 1979–1981 he had been a statistician on a special project of the National Science Foundation/American Statistical Association Census Fellows Program.
Professor Plane has published numerous articles in the leading journals of geography, regional science, planning and demography, and is coauthor of The Geographical Analysis of Population: With Applications to Planning and Business. “Plane and Rogerson” is both a widely acclaimed textbook and a highly cited reference work. Notable recent publications include “On Tracking and Disaggregating Center Points of Population” (Annals of the Association of American Geographers), “Migration Up and Down the Urban Hierarchy and Across the Life Course” (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), “Ties That No Longer Bind? The Patterns and Repercussions of Age-Articulated Migration” (Professional Geographer), and “Regional Science in a Physical/Virtual More/Less World” (Annals of Regional Science).
Extremely active throughout his career in professional organizations, for more than 20 years he directed and organized the conferences of the Western Regional Science Association, as well as organizing an annual meeting of the APCG and four “super-regional” conferences of the Regional Science Association International. He currently serves on 10 journal editorial boards. Plane was the first Editor-in-Chief of the official journal of the RSAI: Papers in Regional Science, and he is a past Co-Managing Editor of the Journal of Regional Science. He has served on the U.S. Census Bureau’s Science Advisory Committee, as well as numerous panels and committees for the National Science Foundation and the National Academies.
A committed, enthusiastic, and popular teacher, Professor Plane’s standard repertoire of classes at the University of Arizona includes a large first-year general education course, “Human Geography and Global Systems”; a core course for the B.S. major in Urban and Regional Development, “Urban Growth and Development”; and a graduate seminar, “The Geographical Analysis of Population.”

Interests
Teaching
INTRODUCTORY HUMAN GEOGRAPHY: I enjoy engaging with 1st year students in a General Education setting, getting them excited about about the big picture issues of how location matters and how their lives intersect with those of the other 7 billion plus people on the planet. URBAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: Tucson has been a great learning laboratory for this course which I have taught since 1981--a core requirement in the B.S. major in Urban and Regional Development; urban land use, transportation, demographics, housing markets, commercial location, zoning and planning and urban finance and governance. I try to bring regional science theory and methods down to an undergraduate level and teach skills that will be of use to our majors as they go on to careers in such fields as urban planning, location analysis, transportation, commercial location, and real estate. THE GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS OF POPULATION: At the graduate level I enjoy teaching my students the theory and practice of spatial demography.
Research
My interests include: spatial interaction; human migration; settlement systems; urban systems; regional science; quantitative methods for spatial analysis; demographics; spatial demography; time geography and individual activity patterns; U.S. historical patterns of settlement, urban growth and development; transportation; census geography and population data. I have worked off and on throughout my career as a visiting research in the Population Division of the U.S. Census Bureau and served on the Bureau's Science Advisory Committee, as well as on several National Academies Panels and Committees on Census-related topics.

Washington, DC: The National Academies Press.More infoFinal Product of the Panel on Addressing Priority Issues for the Next Decade of the American Community Survey. The American Community Survey (ACS) is the result of efforts--dating back to the first census in 1790--to collect data for public purposes through the decennial census process. The transition from the "long-form" of the decennial census to the continuously collected American Community Survey data has resulted in a number of pressing issues that the Panel was asked to address. The book details 28 recommendations about future sampling procedures, new content, data collection methodologies and dissemination practices.
