- Blake, E., & Schon, R. (2020). The archaeology of contemporary migrant journeys in western sicily. Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology, 32(2), 173-194. doi:10.1558/jma.40579More infoThe Sicilian Channel between Sicily and North Africa receives global attention as a major migratory routefor undocumented people entering Europe clandestinely, a tragic nexus of transnational displacement anddesperation. While the plight of massively overloaded and unseaworthy boats of people justifiably receivesthe bulk of media attention, there is a less-observed movement that occurs and has occurred for thousandsof years: small boats expertly transporting handfuls of people back and forth across the Channel betweenTunisia and western Sicily. This study explores the material vestiges of cross-channel migrations throughassemblages identified during fieldwork by the Arizona Sicily Project along the southwest coast of Sicily inthe summers of 2018 and 2019. While the exigencies of maritime crossing require distinct technologies ofmobility, certain elements of migrant material culture are analogous to that found elsewhere, e.g. along theUS-Mexico border zone of Arizona's Sonoran Desert. Such elements include migrants' strategic triangulationof speed, invisibility and survival in deciding what to bring and the tactical triage of gear en route.Moreover, the political and economic injustices that are catalysts for the movements are comparable, as is thecriminalization of the migrants, which has done more to endanger than dissuade them. This article shedsnew light on migrant choices and challenges and contributes to the archaeology of contemporary migration.

Journal of World-Systems Research, 12(2), 231-262. doi:10.5195/jwsr.2006.370More infoThe modern practice of archaeological surveyregional, intensive, diachronic, and interdisciplinaryis well-suited to the study of frontiers. In this paper we provide the example of the Shala Valley Project, which studies the northern Albanian mountain valley of Shala, home to the Shala tribe. Northern Albania is the only place in Europe where tribal societies survived into the 20th century. We attribute their survival to the frontier position of northern Albania, wherein tribal chiefs controlled access to and through valley systems. Shala provides a classic example of a refuge society, perched within a strongly contested peripheral zone. The tribe actively and creatively resisted state incorporation during both the Ottoman (Early Modern) and Modern periods. The northern Albanian frontier may have formed much earlier, though, perhaps as early as the Bronze Age. We bring a broad array of evidence to bear on this question, drawn from the ethno-historical, excavation, and of course, survey-archaeological records.

Philadelphia.More infoIn this paper, I present new evidence for the use of the past as a tool for social power in Mycenaean Greece. Archaeologists have long established that palatial elites employed the older monuments of Grave Circle A at Mycenae and the tholos tombs of Messenia to advertise their ancestry and legitimize their authority. However, people in the Bronze Age used other strategies besides monumentality to forge competitively advantageous connections with the past. Antique personal adornments, especially heirlooms, played significant roles in the creation of an individual's prestige. Such objects promote heritage (especially when linked to known personae) and could be displayed in a range of public contexts, including feasts and burials. One exceptionally robust and overlooked example is Tholos A at Kakovatos, which contained some glass and amber pieces that were already at least a few decades old when deposited. This tomb was in use during the LHIIA period, yet contains exotic objects that find their closest parallels to deposits at Pylos and Mycenae that are a generation or more earlier. I argue that the appearance of such items at Kakovatos demonstrates that the deceased, an elite at the margins of the bigger centers, had adopted a specific strategy of emulation of the rulers at those older and grander sites as a means of legitimizing both local authority and extra-regional status.;Submitted: Yes;Type of Presentation: Professional Organization;

In this paper, I argue that such top-down approaches offer inadequate explanations of how ancient complex societies were maintained. I adopt the perspective that the state is an arena in which groups and individuals vie for social positions and model the interaction of these agents as a set of iterated prisoner's dilemmas. Using the Late Bronze Age nascent state of Pylos in Greece as a case-study, I propose that a cooperative framework offers a more complete explanation of archaic state dynamics.;Submitted: Yes;Interdisciplinary: Yes;Type of Presentation: Professional Organization;
