Biography

Dr. Shelly Cooper has been an active music educator for 32 years. As a researcher and general music specialist, she has presented at numerous local, state, and national music and general education conferences and in-service workshops. Shelly Cooper currently serves as editor for General Music Today. Having served as National Chair for the MENC History SRIG she is the current past-chair. Cooper also serves as the book/media review editor for the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education.

Primary research interests include music acquisition in children, children as composers, and historical aspects of music education. She has articles published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, General Music Today, The New Grove Dictionary of American Music II, The Mountain Lake Reader, and UPDATE: Applications of Research in Music Education. She has choral arrangements published with Hal Leonard and Colla Voce Music, and is a contributing author for the Silver Burdett musictextbook series (2005) and Interactive Music Powered by Silver Burdett with Alfred. [Text series, Grades K-8]. OLE: Online Learning ExchangeTM  Pearson (2012).

Dr. Cooper's research interests include music acquisition in early childhood, children as composers, and historical aspects of music education. At the University of Arizona, her teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate music education courses.
