Biography
Lisanne Skyler is the writer and director of the HBO Documentary Film Brillo Box (3¢ off), following an iconic Andy Warhol Brillo Box as it makes its way from her own family’s living room to a Christie’s auction, and numerous critically acclaimed fiction and documentary films, including the feature film Getting To Know You (1999 Sundance Film Festival, 1999 Venice Film Festival), and the South Central LA documentary No Loans Today (1995 Sundance Film Festival, POV/The American Documentary/PBS). Skyler is the recipient of a FIPRESCI award, a Film Independent Spirit Award Someone to Watch Award nomination, and the Showtime Tony Cox Award for her 1970s coming of age film Capture the Flag. Skyler was recently commissioned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to direct the short film A Few Things About Robert Irwin, for the LACMA Art + Film series. Brillo Box (3¢ off) was an official selection of the 54th New York Film Festival and will air on HBO in 2017.
Lisanne Skyler is an award-winning writer and director of both fiction and nonfiction films. Her short documentary OLDTIMERS(1993), a black and white cinema verite style portrait of the elderly regulars of a San Francisco Irish bar, made with J. Todd Walker, played in such festivals as Cinema du Reel in Paris, the Vancouver International Film Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival, where it won a Special Jury Prize. She went on to make the Sundance Film Festival Documentary Competition entry NO LOANS TODAY (1995) about a black-owned pawnshop in post-riot South Central Los Angeles; and DREAMLAND (2000), a portrayal of the struggle of compulsive gamblers living in Las Vegas. Both NO LOANS TODAY and DREAMLAND were broadcast nationally on PBS's prestigious POV/The American Documentary series and are held in libraries and institutions across the country. In August 2013, NO LOANS TODAY was released digitally on all VOD platforms at http://www.sundance.org/nowplaying/film/no-loans-today/ .
For her feature film debut, Lisanne co-wrote with her sister Tristine and directed the critically acclaimed independent feature film GETTING TO KNOW YOU(1999), adapted from three short stories by Joyce Carol Oates. The film premiered in the 1999 Sundance Film Festival Dramatic Competition. Getting To Know You was chosen as the opening film for the Venice Film Festival Critics Week, received a FIPRESCI Special Jury Award at the Stockholm Film Festival, and a nomination for the Independent Spirit Someone to WatchAward for Skyler. The film debuted theatrically at New York's Film Forum and played in theatres across the U.S, earning Two Thumbs Up from Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper and inclusion in The Village Voice and LA Weekly "Best of 2000" lists. The film critic John Anderson wrote that Getting to Know You "doesn't just reaffirm one's flagging faith in independent cinema. It vindicates the very process, oft-abused as it is, of adapting literature into film." The film was broadcast on Sundance Channel. In Italy, it was widely released to critical acclaim from the Italian Press.
Skyler recently directed a short film based on the feature screenplay CAPTURE THE FLAG (2010), starring Scott Cohen, Jane Stiles, Will Denton and Emmy Clarke. The film was an official selection of the Aspen Shortsfest International Competition, the Hamptons International Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Mill Valley Film Festival, and the Nantucket Film Festival, where it received The Showtime Tony Cox Award for Screenwriting in a Short Film.
Skyler has written both original and adapted screenplays for independent and studio film producers, served on film selection committees and juries for The Sundance Film Festival, The San Francisco International Film Festival and The American Film Institute Film Festival and been profiled as a filmmaker on the PBS series INDEPENDENT VIEW.

- Skyler, L. (2020. A Few Things About Art+Film. Los Angeles County Musem of Art. Los Angeles: Gucci.More infoThis Fall as museums and arts institutions wrested with the impact of the pandemic, I was invited to create a special film for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). For the past nine years, LACMA has commissioned a film from an emerging or mid-career director to tell the story of their Art + Film gala artist honorees — in 2016, I was invited to make a film about Light and Space pioneer Robert Irwin (A Few Things About Robert Irwin). When LACMA determined that its annual Art + Film Gala could not take place this year due to the pandemic, the museum invited me to write and direct a film to tell the history of the LACMA Art + Film Gala and the confluence of art and film at the museum. The film screened privately for the LACMA commuity of high level supporters and we are awaiting details for the release online.

Blending Pop Art history with personal narrative, Brillo Box (3¢ off) follows this Andy Warhol sculpture as it makes its way from a New York family’s living room to the global art market, exploring the ephemeral nature of art and value, and the complex role art plays in our lives and the decisions that shape family history. The film premiered in Aspen International Shortsfest in 2016 and went on to be an official selection of the 54th New York Film Festival and shortlisted for an Academy Award.
