- Mauet, S. D. (2023, January). “But Does it Help?: Actionable and Meaningful Insights from Recent Usability Research”. Innovations in Technology Conference. Phoenix, AZ: Legal Services Corporation.More infoWhen designing and refining any technology, usability testing is one of our main tools to assess what works and what doesn’t. It helps us understand if users can easily access a resource, if our design assumptions stand up to real-life needs, and how we can make our products more welcoming and inclusive. But we also want to know if “working as intended” is actually valuable to users, and achieving the outcomes we aspire to. This session will: 1.) highlight insights from recent usability studies on legal help tools and discuss what design, content and accessibility changes were made as a result, 2.) discuss strategies for participatory approaches that reimagine the role of community allies and clients in the testing process and 3.) offer a step-by-step framework for outcome goal testing that can help projects conceive sound research questions and produce meaningful usability testing data. Bring your own ideas and challenges to this discussion, and take practical tips and resources home.SpeakersLiz Keith(Speaker)Pro Bono Net, Program Director, State and National ProgramsEric Vang(Speaker)Alaska Legal Services Corporation, Senior Technology AttorneySarah Mauet(Speaker)Innovation for Justice, University of Arizona College of Law, UX4Justice Director and Professor of Practice
- Mauet, S. D. (2023, January). “Using Human-Centered Design to Improve the Child Support Experience in Michigan”. Innovations in Technology Conference. Phoenix, AZ: Legal Services Corporation.More infoThe Michigan Office of Child Support (OCS) was considering implementing an online dispute resolution platform statewide to advance its goal to help families achieve well-being and self-sufficiency. However, rather than adopt a new technology and hope it would meet parents’ needs, they partnered with Innovation for Justice's UX4Justice initiative to better understand the obstacles families face with the current system, and to craft human-centered solutions to increasing engagement that address family needs. We’ll share how UX4Justice conducted a UX discovery project to understand the needs, desires, challenges, and pain points families in the child support system currently face, show prototypes of the human-centered tech solutions we tested, and discuss how Michigan is using the recommendations as part of an overall human centered design approach to program development. Finally, we will discuss the importance of user research and provide some tips for how attendees can start doing UX work themselves.
