Creative Works
- Sound Effects /Badum Boom; October; As one of the components of the “Kosmic Komotion” project with South Mountain High School and Betty Johnson Dance Studio in Phoenix, I set choreography from my original choreographic repertoire . The two pieces are edited and restaged versions of the original work. The dancers were half from South Mountain HS and the other half from Betty Johnson Dance Studio. The two groups will come together in late January to perform at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix. I have also listed this project in “ outreach” as well as “scholarly presentation” because the grant received for this project from the Arizona Commission On The Arts addressed more than one category.
- "Prelude To a Kiss" (variation II); Modern Dance; October; I am choreographing a new version of a work that I co-choreographed with Christina Ernst in Chicago,Il. The original piece was part of the repertoire of our performance group "Ernst/Watson Dance" which was sponsored by the Chicago Repertory Dance Ensemble. I will continue to work on this choreography through the Spring 2000 semester. I will increase the cast size from it's original four to eight dancers as well a design new costumes. The new version will involve a new possibility for set design that will be developed in the Spring 2000 semester. The theme revolves around a social gathering with prerecorded music by the Bill Evans Trio as well as atmospheric sounds of people dining. The choreographic process involves setting all choreography without music and developing an internal rhythm within the group. The choroegraphy is then performed with the music serving only as a background instead of directly relating to the choreography. For this reason, it will take a longer time period to complete.
- Tsetse Fly; October; I created a fantasy piece with a tropical theme featuring the music of 1950's composer Martin Denny. The comedy based character piece involved 16 dancers. The storyline revolved around four "tourists" being tormented by four giant "Tsetse Fly" characters during their tropical vacation. The troubled tourists seek the help of 8 "Safari Hunters" to catch the flys but in the end the tourist fall into their own trap. The piece served as a comic relief for the fall performance programs.
- "Jaws"; pom/dance competition routine; October; I was invited by the UA Pomline to choreograph a routine for the Untied Spirit Association college division competition for pom/dance teams. Selections of music from the film "Jaws" was used to give an original touch to a usually very regemented choreographic format used by most pomlines. The goal was to create a routine that is fresh and new within the realm of pomline/danceteam competitions nationwide.
- "Wired" & "Badum Boom"; October; I was invited set these pieces from my original choreographic repertoire for Point Park College Dance Department. I selected two casts of "Wired" a duet and two casts of "Badum Boom" which I restaged for 12 dancers. The pieces will be featured in the department's distinguished subscription concert series in December("Wired") and in their "Con Amor" concert("Badum Boom") in January which features internationally renouned guest choreographers.A special article will also appear in the Pittsburgh Post featuring details of my choreography along with New York choreographer David Parson's interview about his internationally aclaimed piece "The Envelope"
- "Badum Boom"; Jazz Dance; October; I was invited to re-choreograph and re-stage this work from my repertoire of "Wats On Dance"at the Amsterdam School of the Arts, Amsterdam,The Netherlands. The original work was set for four dancers and I enlarged the cast to ten for the professional resident dance company "Jazz Cool". I was in Amsterdam for two weeks to complete this work on the company.New costume and lighting were designed by the school's in house designers.
- Unbreakable; October; Restaged "Unbreakable", a piece co-created with Chicago choreographer,Cristina Ernst and was originaly commissioned by City ArtsII program in Chicago,IL., on the UA Dance Ensemble
- "The Big Put On"; Jazz Dance; October; This piece is from my original choreographic repertoire that was performed by members of my dance troupe "Wats On Dance". I sat the choroegraphy on a student interested in working with me during various dance workshops, festivals, and performances that I am invited to as a guest artist.
- "Sound Effects" (fall 1999); Jazz Dance; October; This piece was originally created during my residency at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Nevada,as guest artist during the Spring 1999 semester. The original piece consisted of eight dancers. I rechoreograghed the work now for sixteen dancers along with new costume and lighting design. This choreography is of a humorous nature and the additon of eight more dancers on stage created a stronger impact when compared to the original piece.
- Wired; dance; October; staged two casts for Grand Valley State University Dance Dept.,Geand Rapids , MI
- Chaos section/ "My Words Turn to Song in Your Fists"; March; I choreographed a structured improvization section in Bruce Taylor's doctoral recital performance. I also staged and assembled all of the transitions of the other choreographers involved.
- Prelude to a Kiss; March; I completed this piece which I began last semester and will be performed for the "Premium Blend" concerts in April. The enlarged cast (from 4 dancers to 16), new staging, and new lighting design were a great success. The choreographic process used ( see 1999 “Prelude To a Kiss” elaboration/ creative work) was a great challenge to the dancers as well as I. The finished product proved successful. The performance featuring guest star Ben Vereen was the highlight of the UA dance division’s season.
- Birthday Variations; Dance; March; I completed this work for two casts .
- "Cycles"; March; I completed this work which was originally to be performed last year with live music by Wil Dietz, Suzanne Knoesp, and Neil Tatman but due to scheduling conflicts, the piece was performed with recorded music instead.
- How to Catch a Man; March; I created "How to Catch a Man" on Kari Schroeder who is one of our graduate students in the dance division.
- How to Catch A Man; Jazz Dance; March; I once again staged "How To Catch A Man" for Kari Shroeder, to be performed in her MFA final project dance concert.
- Intermitent Clairity; contemporary; March; I set "Intermitent Clairity" for Michelle's Seiple's senior BFA project.
- Watchamacallit; March; I traveled to Fresno California and again set this piece from my original choreographic repertoire for The Dancers Studio, an award winning private dance training school. The dancers will perform a restaged version during their spring concert in June. This is the second time this year(see also Outreach-"Red Mountain High School") that I have set a version of this choreography. With each group I have tryed to utilize the unique talent of the dancers to their best advantage. This piece lends itself to this concept wonderfully.
- High Jinks; March; I was asked to set a humorous dance piece from my original choreographic repertoire on the Morgan Street Dance Company, Layfayette,Louisana. The restaged choreography will be performed in competitions across the U.S. The piece is a variation from the first section of "High Jinks" originally choreographed for the Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago Company .
- Confluence; modern dance; March; I was commissioned by UA Graduate Student, Steve Casteel, to create "Confluence", a duet,to be performed as a part of his final MFA project.
- Hi Jinks; dance; March; Ohio Ballet comissioned me to set "Hi Jinks" for their 2005-2006 performing season.
- Cameleons; Jazz Dance; March; Restaged "Cameleons" for Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago to be included in their 2006 national and international touring schedule
