Biography
Kamran Talattof (University of Michigan, 1996) is professor of Near Eastern Studies (Persian language and literature and Iranian culture). He teaches courses on Middle Eastern Women's Literature, Gender Issues, Ideological Movements, Cinema, and language and Literature. Many of his research and publication focus on issues of gender, sexuality, ideology, culture, and language pedagogy. In his projects, he examines how cultural artifacts are created both within and in response to dominant social conditions, political ideologies, and the dominant discourses of sexuality. He traces the connections between literature, culture, ideology, and history. Talattof is the author, co-author, or co-editor of numerous books and articles including the Modernity, Sexuality, and Ideology in Iran: The Life and Legacy of a Popular Female Artist, which was among Choice's Annual Outstanding Academic Titles, 2011, out of nearly 10,000 books from all disciplines sent for review. It also received The L. Yarshater Book Award, 2012. His Politics of Writing in Iran: A History of Modern Persian Literature (a comparative historiography) has been translated into Persian. He has also co-translated two novels into English.

- Choice Review;Description: Book by UA Professor Kamran Talattof Wins Outstanding Academic Title AwardSubmitted by: Middle Eastern and North African StudiesDr. Kamran Talattof's 2011 book "Modernity, Sexuality and Ideology in Iran" was selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title and was announced in the January issue of Choice magazine. The announcement reads, "This year's Outstanding Academic Title list includes 629 books and electronic resources chosen by the Choice editorial staff from among the 7,263 titles reviewed by Choice during the past year. Of these, 600 are print products; the remaining 29 are electronic. These outstanding works have been selected for their excellence in scholarship and presentation, the significance of their contribution to the field, and their value as important - often the first - treatment of their subject. Comprising just over 9 percent of the titles reviewed by Choice during the past year, and less than 3 percent of the more than 25,000 titles [of all academic disciplines] submitted to Choice during this same period, Outstanding Academic Titles are truly the 'best of the best.' As always a select group of publishers and authors are represented on such a list."Kamran Talattof is professor of Persian and Iranian studies in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona. He is the author, coauthor and coeditor of numerous books and articles. Among his publications are "The Politics of Writing in Iran: A History of Modern Persian Literature" and the coedited book "The Poetry of Nizami Ganjavi: Knowledge, Love, and Rhetoric.;, Fall 2012

- Talattof, K. -. (2018). "What Kind of Wine did Rudaki Desire?: Samanids' Search for Cultural and National Identity ". In Layered Heart: Essays on Persian Poetry(pp 127-171). Washington DC: Mage.More infoIn this book manuscript, I present an interpretive explication of the meanings of the metaphors, symbols, and allegories embedded in the poetry of Rudaki, a 9th century Persian poet of Samarqand (a city now located in the republic of Uzbekistan). In doing so, I read Rudaki's work in the cultural context of the Samanid Period (819-999 CE), a native Persian dynasty of Greater Iran and Central Asia that came to power more than one and half centuries after the invasion of Persia and the collapse of the Sassanid Empire by the Arab Muslim forces in 651 CE. Rudaki (859-940 CE or 248-329 H) is not only the most famous poet of the first half of 10th century Persia, but is also considered the founder of Persian poetry as we know it today. His full name in anthologies and historical books is mentioned as Abu Abdallh Jafar ibn Mohammad Rudaki or more precisely he is Son of Abd Allah Jafar son of Mohammad son of Ḥakim son of Abd al-Raḥman son of Adam; Rudhaki, the Poet of Samarqand. IRANIAN STUDIES, 41(1), 19-35.More infoThis article analyzes Behbahani's narrative and poetic works as they reflect different sociopolitical discourses over decades and discusses her contribution to the rise of new literary discourses in different periods. These discourses reflect the pre-Revolutionary committed and post-Revolutionary feminist literary movements and, in recent years, an emerging trend toward expression of the cultural exigencies of modernity. This new development results from efforts for renewed literary modernity, in which feminist, reformist, and civil society movements find common ground for concern. Behbahani's poem, "I Will Rebuild You, Oh My Homeland," is analyzed to show that recent re-readings and public performances of this older piece may signify a literary shift regarding issues of modernity.

International Journal of Middle East Studies. doi:10.1017/s0020743800065193More infoThe literary works produced by Iranian women writers after the 1979 revolution, despite their diversity in artistic value and quality of narrative, commonly manifest a remarkable sensitivity toward women's issues and gender relations. The overall theme tying these works together seems to be the problematic of gender hierarchy and women's suffering expressed in a figurative language, transcending the extant male-dominated literary discourse. In these works, women's personal and private experiences become public. Their narratives articulate their protests against sexual oppression and reflect their struggle for identity. This phenomenon is noteworthy not simply because this is a literature produced by women about women, but also because this body of work displays a contrast with the literary works produced by women in the decades preceding the revolution. Pre-revolutionary works, under the sway of the dominant literary discourse, did not give rise to a feminist literary movement, for they emphasized sociopolitical issues more than specific gender issues. To be sure, there were themes related to women, but they were often presented in the context of socially conscious yet male-dominated committed literature. Women's literary paradigms before and after the revolution thus represent different literary discourses, and the Iranian Revolution of 1979 appears to be the major historical event that separates these two discourses and may well be responsible for the shift. In a strict sense, gender is socially constituted, and gender issues are in fact a type of social issue.

Faith, Facts, and Fantasy: Nezami's Various Portrayal of the Story of Ascension. 16th Symposium on Medieval Studies, Fantasy, and Imagination in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age: Projections, Dreams, and Illusion, University of Arizona 2019. University of Arizona: Middle Ages and Early Modern Age Studies.More infoClassical Persian literature is rich with the portrayal of and references to the story of the Ascension of the Prophet of Islam into heaven to meet God (mi'raj). According to the legend, the archangels Gabriel and Michael meet Prophet Muhammad and prepare him for his meeting with God. Gabriel and a winged mythical creature Buraq transport him overnight from Mecca to Jerusalem and then from Jerusalem to heaven, possibly using a ladder (miʿrāj). Mohammad and Gabriel proceed through seven levels of heaven to reach the throne of God. Numerous Persian poets have recast the story. Nezami (a 12th century Persian poet) has versified the story of the Ascension in almost all of his books, collectively known as Five Treasures (Panj Ganj). Building upon the works of Fouchecour, Gruber, Mesaimi, Burgel, Asfrayeni, Hematian, Porshekuh, Favai, and others, this paper raises a number of new questions. Why has Nezami portrayed the story of ascension in all of his work? How are these presentations different? What do they tell us about the author's approach to literature and poetry? Generally, critics of Persian poetry take these representations as a sign of religious and/or mystic belief of the poets who presented them. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the portrayal of the story of Ascension in Nezami's works to find the main driving motive in his various portrayals and renditions of the story. The paper further compares Nezami's presentation of the Story of Ascension (from all his five books) with those presented in Shiite and Suni sources on the Story of Ascension (books of me'raj) and with those of other poets and authors who recounted the story in their literary works. Moreover, the paper intends to explain Nezami's evolving literary thoughts through his rendering of the story overtime and the way each version in each of his masterpieces corresponds to his notion of the concepts of rhetoric and poesy. This inquiry is a continuation of the projects on Nezami's poetry in showing the connection between his treatment of different themes and subjects and his dedication to his profession.
