Biography
Professor Xavier R. Segura is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona. A proud UArizona alumnus and first-generation college graduate (FirstCat) from the Sunnyside and South Tucson community, Professor Segura brings a profound commitment to education, mentorship, and advancing equity. He teaches criminal justice administration, criminal justice ethics, law, and special topics in law and underrepresented populations, fostering intellectually rigorous and inclusive learning environments that prepare students to critically engage with the complexities of law and justice. Professor Segura’s research focuses on the experiences of historically underrepresented populations, with an emphasis on systemic inequities related to race, gender, diversity, criminal justice ethics, law, and the legal system. His work bridges academic scholarship, public policy, and legal advocacy, addressing critical societal challenges and driving impactful solutions. In addition to his teaching and research, Professor Segura forges partnerships with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, mentors student veterans and W.A. Franke Honors College students, and supervises W.A. Frank Honors College theses. He serves as one of the Distinguished Writing Across Curricula Faculty Fellows and a Hispanic Serving Institution Ambassador, exemplifying leadership and commitment to advancing academic excellence and equity. Recognized with the 2022 Leadership in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award and honored by the City of Tucson and the United States Army, Professor Segura’s dedication to empowering students and fostering meaningful change defines his distinguished career and lasting impact.Awards
