Biography
David B. Yaden, Jr., Ph.D. (University of Oklahoma) is Professor of Language, Reading and Culture in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Sociocultural Studies at the University of Arizona (UA). He is also Co-Editor of the Journal of Literacy Research, one of the premier research journals in the field of literacy studies. Prior to his present position at UA, he held appointments at Emory University, the University of Houston, and the University of Southern California. He was Principal Investigator in the federally funded Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA) where he oversaw and directed the implementation of an early literacy curriculum for 250 Spanish-speaking preschoolers in inner-city Los Angeles. Most recently (2009-2012), he directed a statewide consortium of researchers from Arizona’s major universities in the evaluation of the state’s early childhood initiative, First Things First, a study of over 9,000 children, ages 2 months–7 years-of-age, to evaluate health, developmental and educational factors contributing to school readiness. His research interests and specializations include developmental issues in early childhood education, the acquisition of literacy and biliteracy in young children, family literacy, theories of reading disability, microgenetic research design and the application of complex adaptive systems theory to growth in reading and writing. In addition to numerous journal articles and book chapters on various aspects of literacy in very young children, recent publications include archival, state-of-the-field integrative reviews in such volumes as the Handbook of Reading Research Volume III (2000) on emergent literacy, the Handbook of Research in the Teaching of the English Language Arts, 2nd and 3rd eds. (2003, 2011) on family literacy issues; and in subsequent volumes of the Handbook of Research on the Education of Young Children (2006, 2012) relating to linguistically and culturally diverse children acquiring more than one language. He has presented his work regularly over the past three decades at professional meetings such as the International Reading Association, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the Child Welfare League of America, the World Congress of Reading, the American Educational Research Association, the Literacy Research Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Council for Research on Language and Literacy. He also currently serves on the editorial review boards of The Reading Research Quarterly, Research in the Teaching of English and Early Education and Development.

Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 31(5), 469-481.More infoAbstract: This study examined reliability and validity of the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA), based on samples of parents and teachers' ratings of 1,145 entering kindergartners in the Southwest. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that DECA presented good reliability and validity for manifest variables, corroborating previous findings. Three latent variables (initiative, self-control, and attachment) substantiated reliability estimates but showed insufficient discriminant validity because of multicollinearity among latent variables. We recommended caution in interpreting and applying results of DECA assessments in practice because of a lack of discriminant validity. Thus, these findings addressed the need for researchers, educators, and policy makers to consider alternative instruments for early identification of social and emotional problems in young children until new research and a revised DECA model show evidence for the validity of outcomes. © 2012 Sage Publications.
