  If a desired outcome of schooling is for students to become active and productive members of society, then understanding their decision-making process towards that end is vitally important. Furthermore, leading scholars in adolescent development have suggested the need for research that aids in clarifying youth purpose as a psychological construct and for more rigorous efforts to measure it (Benson, 2008; Damon, 2009; Hill, Burrow, & Summer, 2013). A key component of the present study is the development a valid and reliable measure of adolescent purpose. A more complete understanding of the nature of the development of purpose in adolescence will help those who study and work with young people create better opportunities for them to pursue goals and aspirations that are at once personally meaningful, of consequence to the communities in which they live, and beneficial to society at large through their future occupations and civic engagement. The overarching goal of this study is to establish an empirical model that links the dimensions of youth purpose (Damon, Menon, & Bronk, 2003), individuals’ orientation for purpose, agency, achievement motivation, occupational choice, and civic engagement. We hypothesize that the construct of youth purpose might be a very powerful predictor of occupational choice and subsequent civic engagement among adolescents. Further, we believe that the relationship between youth purpose and civic engagement might be mediated by other variables associated with academic motivation, and therefore potentially influenced (enhanced) by carefully planned educational interventions.
