Biography

Michael W. Marcellin (S’81–M’87–SM’93–F’02) was born in Bishop, CA, USA, in 1959. He received the B.S. degree (summa cum laude) from San Diego State University, San Diego, CA, USA, in 1983, where he was named the most outstanding student in the College of Engineering, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA, in 1985 and 1987, respectively, all in electrical engineering.,Since 1988, he has been with The University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, USA, where he holds the title of Regents Professor of electrical and computer engineering, and optical sciences. He is currently the International Foundation for Telemetering Chaired Professor of electrical and computer engineering with The University of Arizona. He is a major contributor to JPEG2000, the emerging second-generation standard for image compression. His research interests include digital communication and data storage systems, data compression, and signal processing. He has authored or co-authored over 200 publications in these areas.,Dr. Marcellin was a recipient of the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award in 1992 and a co-recipient of the 1993 IEEE Signal Processing Society Senior (Best Paper) Award.
