- Purdy, T. S. (2018, Spring). The Ken Wolfgang Collection: Films in Time. Southwest Popular/American Culture Association 39th Annual Conference. Albuquerque, NM: Southwest Popular/American Culture Association.More infoTravelogue films presented popular travel destinations and tourist attractions to captivated audiences throughout the United States. Filmmaker Ken Wolfgang produced travelogues between 1958-1982 that documented a breadth of regions and their cultures ranging from Mexico, Thailand, Japan, India, Singapore, Austria, and the American southwest desert. With these films, Wolfgang strove to document the cultural perspective of his subjects without reinforcing the negative stereotypes of foreign cultures held by members of contemporary American culture. This presentation examines the travelogue films of Ken Wolfgang in which the filmmaker strove to avoid traditional tourist highlights which most travelogue films documented, and instead sought to provide insightful perspectives into the lives' of the film's subjects.Ken Wolfgang’s collection of films and papers were donated to the University of Arizona Special Collections Library in 2012 and were quickly made available to researchers via traditional archival processing practices as well as a digital exhibit. Archivists successfully collaborated with faculty from the English Department to provide students from a graduate level English class to access content from this exhibit to compose essays, which they presented at an end of the semester symposium held at Special Collections. This presentation discusses the challenges that processing a large film collection posed to the archive and steps taken to remediate them as well as the successful collaboration between archivists and English faculty to embed primary source materials within class curriculum. The presentation also discusses the presentation of travelogue films as a unique form of performance art, and the enthusiastic community that provided exhibition outlets for this unique and often overlooked genre.

- Purdy, T. S., & Diaz, J. (2016, August-December). The Life and Legacy of the USS Arizona Exhibit. University of Arizona. http://speccoll.library.arizona.edu/exhibits/life-and-legacy-uss-arizonaMore infoI was the co-curator of the Life and Legacy of the USS Arizona Exhibit. For this exhibit I conducted extensive research to curate materials to construct the exhibit which commemorated the 75th anniversary of that tragic event and honors the 1177 crewmen and officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. The extensive USS Arizona Collection, which has been created primarily from donations of individuals associated with the battleship during her 26-year life, was the source of exhibit content. The exhibit displayed original photographs, papers, scrapbooks, documents, and memorabilia, such as the ship’s newspaper, official Navy documents, and crew correspondence. Also included were oral histories with men who served on the ship, materials that document the USS Arizona Memorial, papers from The USS Arizona Reunion Association, and the story about the USS Arizona Bell that hangs in the Student Union Memorial Center. I conducted twenty interviews with local and national news outlets, including KUAZ, KOLD, KVOA, The Arizona Daily Star, The Arizona Republic, PAC-12 Network, CSPAN 3, and CBS Nightly News to promote scholarly use of exhibit and related USS Arizona Collection (AZ 517) and the mission of the Special Collections and the University of Arizona Library to a local and national audience. I collaborated with the University of Arizona Athletics Department to design a commemorative uniform that Incorporated primary source materials from the Life and Legacy of the USS Arizona Exhibit that was worn by the University of Arizona Football Team during the home opening game against the University of Hawaii on September 17, 2016.
