Biography
My teaching and research focus on global remote sensing of land surface vegetation, with a strong emphasis on developing precise measurements, data, algorithms, and models for calibrated time series analysis. This work seeks to assess the impacts of climate change and land use on vegetation, phenology, ecohydrology, water, carbon, nutrient cycles, and ecosystem composition and function across diverse biomes. By bridging natural resources management with advanced remote sensing techniques, my research addresses complex challenges in both engineering and society, spanning areas such as agricultural productivity, ecosystem management, watershed analysis at scales from local to global, and the precise observation of some of these phenomena.
Additionally, my research group has developed a program dedicated to engineering and applied use of drone technology, providing rapid, cost-effective platforms for land surface characterization, precision mapping, precision agriculture, and low-cost validation of global remote sensing data. A field that is evolving very quickly providing for opportunities but also challenges.
I am also committed to fostering an engaging academic environment for students at all levels. I promote a program that actively involves undergraduate and graduate students in internships, MS and Ph.D. research opportunities, and immersive, collaborative research projects, encouraging them to develop their research interests through hands-on experience and teamwork.

EGU General Assembly Conference Abstracts. doi:10.5194/egusphere-egu21-100More infoThe concept of a sustainable green city based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)–Goal 11 - sustainable cities and communities – may not be narrowed down to solely intensifying urban green spaces. Sustainability could include urban water management to alleviate possible conflict among “water‐saving” and “greening cities” strategies. Water consumption by urban greenery has a major role in urban water management, particularly in water-scarce regions where green covers are most affected by drought and aridity. More green and blue water resources are required to maintain and expand urban green spaces. Quantifying the water footprint of urban greenery helps to balance greening cities while water saving from both green and blue water resources. We employed remote sensing and artificial intelligence techniques to assess the water consumption and water footprint of a 780‐ha public green space, the Adelaide Parklands in Australia. We estimated the green and blue water footprint of this green space (containing 29 parks) during 2010-2018 on a monthly basis. Our results showed that the mean total water footprint of the Adelaide Parklands was about 7.75 gigaliter per annum over 2010-2018; it varied from 7.19 gigaliter/year in 2018 to 8.45 gigaliter/year in 2012. The blue water footprint was consistently higher than the green water footprint even in wet time of the year. We suggest implementing sponge city and water sensitive urban design (WSUD) techniques to help greening cities while reducing the water footprint of urban green spaces. Sensors (Basel, Switzerland), 18(5).More infoThe Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) is a key Earth science parameter used to assess vegetation, originally developed and calibrated for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites. With the impending decommissioning of the MODIS sensors by the year 2020/2022, alternative platforms will need to be used to estimate EVI. We compared Landsat 5 (2000⁻2011), 8 (2013⁻2016) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS; 2013⁻2016) to MODIS EVI (2000⁻2016) over a 420,083-ha area of the arid lower Colorado River Delta in Mexico. Over large areas with mixed land cover or agricultural fields, we found high correspondence between Landsat and MODIS EVI (R² = 0.93 for the entire area studied and 0.97 for agricultural fields), but the relationship was weak over bare soil (R² = 0.27) and riparian vegetation (R² = 0.48). The correlation between MODIS and Landsat EVI was higher over large, homogeneous areas and was generally lower in narrow riparian areas. VIIRS and MODIS EVI were highly similar (R² = 0.99 for the entire area studied) and did not show the same decrease in performance in smaller, narrower regions as Landsat. Landsat and VIIRS provide EVI estimates of similar quality and characteristics to MODIS, but scale, seasonality and land cover type(s) should be considered before implementing Landsat EVI in a particular area.

Past studies were focused on the timing of phenological events and their cues but not on the accompanying changes in leaf area that regulate vegetation-atmosphere exchanges of energy, momentum, and mass. Here we report, from analysis of 5 years of recent satellite data, seasonal swings in green leaf area of approximately 25% in a majority of the Amazon rainforests. This seasonal cycle is timed to the seasonality of solar radiation in a manner that is suggestive of anticipatory and opportunistic patterns of net leaf flushing during the early to mid part of the light-rich dry season and net leaf abscission during the cloudy wet season. These seasonal swings in leaf area may be critical to initiation of the transition from dry to wet season, seasonal carbon balance between photosynthetic gains and respiratory losses, and litterfall nutrient cycling in moist tropical forests.
