Families in society-The journal of contemporary social services, 97(3), 181-190. doi:10.1606/1044-3894.2016.97.24More infoThe iTEAM (My Treatment Empowerment for Adolescents on the Move) project used a comprehensive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) affirming system-of-care approach to provide intensive case management, substance abuse and mental health treatment, linkages to housing, and other supportive services to LGBTQ and straight-allied (A) youth experiencing homelessness. The iTEAM project aimed to decrease substance use, improve mental health status, increase housing access and stability, improve life skills, increase linkages to other needed services, and reduce HIV risk behaviors. This study examines outcomes of 210 iTEAM participants who completed baseline and 6-month postbaseline self-report assessments. At follow-up, substance use remained low and mental health had improved. Engagement in employment increased, as did housing stability. These findings suggest that the iTEAM system-of-care model might be effective for working with LGBTQ and A youth experiencing homelessness.
- Korchmaros, J. D., Powell, C., & Stevens, S. (2013). Chasing sexual orientation: a comparison of commonly used single-indicator measures of sexual orientation. Journal of homosexuality, 60(4), 596-614.More infoThis research investigated the utility of single-indicator measures of sexual orientation in examining group differences. Adolescents and young adults reported their sexual orientations, preferences, and partners. Results indicate that, (a) depending on the measure of sexual orientation, 10% to 22% cannot be categorized into a sexual orientation group using a single-indicator measure; (b) self-identified sexual orientation is often incongruent with preference and behavior; (c) incongruity differs by gender and self-identified sexual orientation; and (d) detected differences in gay/lesbian, bisexual, and straight individuals vary by measure of sexual orientation. These results indicate that classification of sexual orientation by single-indicator measures can lead to inconsistent conclusions across studies.

Informing sexuality education through youth-generated anonymous questions. Sex Education, 13(sup1), 84-98. doi:10.1080/14681811.2013.781020More infoThis paper examines a comprehensive sexuality education programme, Health Education for Youth (HEY), which incorporates anonymous questions about sex and sexuality that participating youth generate into the curriculum. HEY utilises a social ecology framework, decolonising perspectives and feminist methods to inform the programme, its facilitation and the incorporation of participant questions into the curriculum. This paper describes the theoretical and methodological frameworks; curriculum content and use of anonymous questions; programme and participant characteristics; and types and content of questions asked by youth. Findings indicate that young people utilise their agency to ask important sexuality questions and are concerned about similar types and content of questions regardless of programme setting. The benefits of using a social ecology framework, decolonising perspectives and feminist methods to guide curriculum content and session facilitation are discussed along with the value of incorporatin...

Journal of Social Work Practice in The Addictions, 12(3), 219-241. doi:10.1080/1533256x.2012.702624More infoFamily Drug Courts (FDC) support parents' reunification efforts by providing case management aimed at cross-agency collaborations. Innovatively, the Pima County FDC includes trauma-specific treatment provided concurrently with alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment. This study examines outcomes including AOD use, mental health, education and employment involvement, housing stability, and reunification of 121 FDC participants who completed baseline and 6-month postbaseline self-report assessments. At follow-up, AOD use remained low and mental health problems had decreased. Engagement in employment and education increased, as did housing stability. This study suggests that the Pima County FDC model might be effective for working with parents battling substance abuse.
