- Crist, J. D., Pacheco, C. L., Daly, P., & Mary McDaniel, B. (2022). Experiences With Suicide Loss: A Qualitative Study. Clinical Nursing Research, 31(8), 1491-1499. doi:10.1177/10547738221119344More infoTo better understand suicide loss survivors' experiences and barriers to accessing support and mental health care, 28 (21 women and 7 men) suicide loss survivors were interviewed. Using qualitative analysis of 28 in-depth, semi-structured phone interviews data, three categories emerged: Life before Suicide, Life after Suicide, and Meaning of Life. This deeper understanding of suicide loss survivors along with inclusion of experiences of male and rural participants' suicide loss, fill previously identified research gaps. Our findings suggest importance in providing emotional support and mental health resources to those with suicide intent or experiences with suicide loss. Most importantly, the recognition of suicide loss survivors extends beyond the immediate family and includes cousins, friends, and work associates. Recognition of extended suicide loss survivors' bereavement will provide additional opportunities for healthcare providers to effectively intervene with this vulnerable population.

Outpatient telecardiology perceptions among rural, suburban, and urban veterans utilizing in-person cardiology versus telecardiology services: A mixed methods analysis.. The Journal of rural health : official journal of the American Rural Health Association and the National Rural Health Care Association, 37(4), 812-820. doi:10.1111/jrh.12586More infoTo better understand opportunities and barriers to implementation and adoption, this mixed-methods study qualitatively examined attitudes toward telecardiology services among veterans who use in-person (IP) outpatient cardiology service versus those using telecardiology (TC) outpatient services..Free-text responses were collected from N = 179 veterans enrolled in Veteran Health Administration (VHA) IP or TC services in 3 rural-serving, outpatient telehealth clinics and 1 large, metropolitan outpatient center. Mixed-method analyses of responses included thematic analysis, followed by comparison of code categories and themes between IP and TC groups..Fifteen thematic coding categories were identified, which comprised 4 valence categories (favorable or unfavorable attitudes toward TC and IP), as well as themes pertaining to obstacles and opportunities for TC implementation. Overall, veterans enrolled in TC held more favorable attitudes toward TC than those enrolled in IP. Veteran responses included structural concerns (eg, time demands, access, and travel), as well as humanistic qualities (rapport, competence, and face-to-face contact). Differences were observed between the responses of veterans who reported dwelling in urban, suburban, and rural communities, with rural-identifying veterans generally holding more favorable attitudes toward TC than suburban-identifying veterans..TC users had overwhelmingly positive perceptions of TC. Conversely, unfavorable attitudes from IP patients toward TC did not appear to be borne out in the responses of TC users. On the contrary, TC users' responses may indicate opportunities for allaying the concerns of TC-naïve veterans. This suggests promise for developing tailored education to dispel barriers for TC service implementation.

- Pacheco, C. L. (2022, June). Academic-Practice Partnerships: Opportunity for Recruitment, Retention, & QI. 48th Annual Arizona Rural Health Conference. Flagstaff, AZ: Arizona Center for Rural Health.More infoTraining health professions students is a critical part of workforce development and mitigating current shortages. Recruitment and retention of our healthcare providers is a potential resource intensive process that further impacts shortages. Working with health professions students also provides an opportunity to promote targeted recruitment, interprofessional practice, as well as engage preceptors and stakeholders in professional development. Clinical rotations facilitate recruitment, permitting sites to try out students and students to try out sites, over time, ensuring a good fit prior to formal employment. Participating in practice-based QI or research projects, has been shown to impact retention. Projects also serve to improve quality or access to care, with minimal site resources. These projects are generally led and supervised by a doctoral committee with expertise in conducting projects, as well as University IRB oversight to ensure participant protection. This poster provides a brief overview of the potential value to sites working with health professions students and strategies to maximize mutually beneficial opportunities, with a focus on precepting, professional development, clinical placement, and site QI/research projects. Specific examples will also be provided.
