- Pfander, J. L. (2023, February). Rangelands Without Borders - Working Across Disciplines: A Librarian's Role (Plenary co-presenter). Society for Range Management (SRM) 2023 Annual Meeting. Boise, Idaho: Society for Range Management.More infoRangeland science is not a single discipline it is a synthesis of several scientific topics and lived experiences. Successful management of rangelands requires knowledge of soils, water, climate, plant, livestock, wildlife, humans and much more. It is impossible to master all topics in a rangeland textbook or land management handbook. It takes a unique and confident person to recognize their limitations and reach across disciplines to accomplish the art of rangeland management. A successful example of this discipline mixing is the Rangeland Partnership which is a group of rangeland extension professionals and librarians who work side by side to make information available to land managers. Accomplishments of the Rangeland Partnership include the Rangeland Gateway and RangeDocs which are searchable databases to help rangeland managers find high quality information. In this plenary we will hear from Tip Hudson, a range-livestock extension specialist, and Jeanne Pfander, and agricultural librarian, who will discuss the value of reaching across disciplines and working in an interdisciplinary fashion. Eric Winford, Associate Director of the Rangeland Center, will moderate this discussion and bring to light the powerful value of working across disciplines.

What are you saying? Building a communication roadmap to effectively share Extension knowledge (Poster presentation)
. 2023 University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Annual Conference. Tucson, Arizona: University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.More infoRangeland and natural resource Extension professionals are subject matter experts that are challenged to provide education to stakeholders in an increasingly technology-driven world. However, very few Extension professionals have formal training in communication or marketing. Recognizing this critical need, The Rangelands Partnership collaborated with a marketing expert to create a communication roadmap (available at https://rangelandsgateway.org/communication). The roadmap helps Extension professionals better understand the target audience, aids in creating relevant and engaging messages, and shares best practices for communication channels and writing styles. To showcase these three critical elements, a roadmap was developed to highlight an innovative new online tool called RangeDocs (https://docs.rangelandsgateway.org/), which provides page-level search results from key rangeland documents. The real-world roadmap demonstrates how Extension professionals can save time and energy by systematically working to ensure that the right message gets into the right hands at the right time. - Pfander, J. L. (2023, August).

Tucson, Arizona: University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.More infoThe Rangelands Partnership (RP) is an organization composed of range professionals, academic librarians and IT experts from universities west of the Mississippi. The RP brings together the diverse skills of members working together to identify or create and organize authoritative web-based content, delivered through the Rangelands Gateway (RG) website. The audience for the RG includes Extension professionals, range managers and others who are invested in supporting the health and sustainability of rangelands and the communities who depend on them. This poster presents RG resources such as collections of freely available articles, reports, etc.; partner state resources; learning and decision support tools; global resources (particularly those related to the 2026 International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists); and the RangeDocs tool which allows Extension professionals, agency staff, and other land managers to search key rangeland resources and zero in on critical information at the paragraph level. - Lien, A., Dosamontes, E., Conley, J., Hutchinson, B.
