Chandos Publishing. doi:10.1016/B978-0-08-100598-9.00014-3More infoAbstract To support the information literacy needs of a large student population, the University of Arizona libraries invested substantial institutional resources, including programmer and librarian time, in developing a system that integrates library content into the campus’ learning management system (LMS). An analysis of data. as well as informal collection of qualitative feedback show that this embedded system is accessed more frequently and consistently by students over the course of a semester than course guides linked on the library website. Studies have shown that the use of library materials has a positive correlation with students’ attainment of critical thinking skills, overall academic success, and persistence. By placing library resources where students are already working—i.e., within the LMS—the University of Arizona libraries can contribute to the academic success and retention of the university’s more than 40,000 students.

It is neither free nor openly licensed, but students already pay for access through their tuition and fees. Common uses are linking out to articles in library databases instead of creating a coursepack, and replacing textbooks with library ebooks that are licensed for multiple simultaneous users. Librarians across the country are working on exciting projects to not only integrate library content into courses, but also to make the discovery process simpler for faculty and less labor-intensive for library staff. Join this webinar to learn about several libraries' solutions, share your own work, and consider next steps at your library. Presenters:Richenda Hawkins, Linn-Benton Community College, wrote a campus report for Open Oregon about a project that used bookstore data to discover and purchase ebooks that replaced textbooks. Ann Agee and Naomi Moy, San Jose State University, are part of a project that posts Textbooks available as eBooks in the Library on the library website. Liz Siler, UNC Charlotte, has helped create an "E-Textbook" database of library ebooks that faculty can select for their courses. All of the titles in the database are vetted for unlimited simultaneous user access, no DRM, and perpetual access.
